Provide field service engineering and technical assistance to customers in areas of installation, startup, maintenance & repair, training, and modification of equipment. Provide technical solutions to customers that involve engineering research impacting equipment or product design, testing of materials, process studies, and economic impact analysis. Typically requires a Bachelor's degree in engineering (electrical, mechanical or engineering technology). This is a degreed engineer with at least one year of experience. Participates on project teams and carries out assigned work activities. Works on fairly routine or structured engineering projects or repair.

POSITION SUMMARY 

The Write-Up Inspector is responsible for inspecting completed railcars for accuracy and conformance. The Inspector will ensure all outbound railcars meet company requirements in accordance with AAR, FRA, customer and TRPI quality guidelines. 

 

Primary responsibilities and/or essential functions include, but are not limited to: 

 

SKILLS/SPECIFICATIONS 

Perform inspections of incoming and outgoing railcars to ensure all FRA, DOT, and customer requirements are satisfied.   

Ensure that all customer supplied information has been received prior to inspection (i.e. Scopes of Work, MSDS’, cleaning certificates, drawings and gasket and o-ring specs).  

Ensure that all regulatory information has been received prior to inspection (i.e. Early Warnings, Maintenance Advisories, UMLER and regulatory test dates). 

Thoroughly inspect all railcars for defects and non-conformances in accordance with all AAR, FRA, customer and TRPI guidelines.  

Compare work performed to the Work Order and report findings on applicable forms.  

Create an accurate and detailed write-up of all repairs and non-conformances found on all bad-ordered and program railcars on Write-Up inspection as well as customer required modifications including the accurate estimation of all associated labor, material and parts (to include part numbers) and submit to Office Manager for estimate submission in customer, railroad, 3rd party fleet management and TRPI systems for approval. 

Create an accurate and detailed Joint Inspection Certificates of all repairs and non- conformances found on wreck damaged railcars on Write-Up inspection and submit to the Office Manager for submission in customer, damaging railroad, 3rd party fleet management and TRPI systems for approval. 

Keep accurate inspection status records and provide updates to Supervisor(s) as required.  

Communicate clearly and professionally via writing and orally with customers regarding the inspections of their railcars as required. 

Regularly analyze drawings and ensure the proper stenciling of cars. 

Review Work Order and all applicable forms for accuracy and completeness. 

Maintain and update manuals such as Standard Repair Manuals and FRA Regulations. Review such manuals on a continuing basis to maintain complete knowledge of necessary repairs. 

Maintain records of cars shipped. 

Other duties and projects as assigned by the Write Up Supervisor or Repair Manager. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

EDUCATIONAL/EXPERIENCE/REQUIREMENTS 

High School diploma or GED. 

Ability to read and comprehend basic drawings and perform basic math skills (adding/subtraction). 

3 years verifiable work experience. 

A minimum of 6 months in a repair environment with exposure to all railcar types worked at that facility is required. 

Welding and NDT experience a plus. 

AWS Certified welding inspector VT Level II or the ability to achieve this certification. 

 

OTHER SKILLS/ABILITIES REQUIRED 

Dependable.  Meets standards of punctuality and attendance.  

Mechanically inclined and willingness to learn different tasks. 

Complies with all safety rules and procedures. 

Industry knowledge of AAR and FRA rules, and Tank Car Maintenance Regulations; Knowledge of current regulatory requirements (e.g., AAR MSRP, M-1002, Section C, Part III, HM201); Knowledge of FRA regulations, preferred. 

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS 

Working in this environment requires the use of safety equipment to include but not limited to; eye safety glasses, work boots and the ability to wear a respirator. 

The ability to perform physical activities that require considerable use of arms and legs and moving the whole body, such as crawling, climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping and handling of materials for more than 50% of the workday. 

Ability to lift 50 pounds safely. 

Working around heavy moving equipment with intermittent exposure to vibration when using impact tools. 

Work outdoors in all weather conditions. 

Work in elevated heights and confined spaces.  Able to navigate scaffolds, floors, ladders and walking surfaces that are uneven. 

Use of respirator as required. 

The ability to sustain mental and visual attention to details for sustained periods of time. 

 

WORK SITE ENVIRONMENT 

Must comply with all safety requirements at all times and lead by example regarding safety. 

Primary work environment subject to extreme heat or cold for considerable amounts of time.  Must dress accordingly. 

Hearing protection shall be required in certain designated areas to noise levels greater than 80 decibels. 

Scaffolds, floors, ladders and walking surfaces may be uneven.

Pay Range:

55,800.00 - 68,200.00
