Job Summary:

We are seeking a hands-on Welding Applications Engineer to support welding process development, customer demonstrations, and technical training in our Carol Stream, IL lab. This role is key to connecting our advanced welding technologies with real-world customer needs by conducting weld trials, developing procedures, supporting automation initiatives, and providing the sales team with technical expertise. The ideal candidate has a strong foundation in welding processes, excellent communication skills, and a customer-focused approach. This position works closely with sales, engineering, marketing, and training teams to deliver practical solutions that support business growth.

This position centers on developing and validating customer-specific welding procedures, conducting in-person and virtual demonstrations, hosting technical training sessions, producing technical documentation, and supporting remote communications with customers and sales teams. The individual will also help the field-based Sales Specialist as needed, ensuring alignment across pre-sales, applications development, and customer support.

Key Responsibilities:

Welding Process Development

Develop and execute welding procedures based on customer-specific materials and applications using processes such as GMAW-P, GTAW, high-deposition MIG, and others.Run customer samples, weld trials, and prototype builds to support sales, product development, and automation initiatives.Utilize welding analysis tools such as high-speed video, waveform data capture, and arc monitoring systems to validate and optimize welding performance.Document results in a structured, professional format for customer delivery, sales enablement, and internal reference.

Customer-Focused Applications Support

Host in-house customer visits, product demonstrations, and application reviews at the Carol Stream lab.Conduct remote support through regular telephone and email communication, including technical Q&A, results discussion, and application troubleshooting.Lead and participate in live webinars, virtual demonstrations, and online customer engagements to support remote sales processes.Support discovery discussions with sales and automation teams to define customer application requirements and align technical solutions.

Training and Enablement

Develop and deliver hands-on and virtual training sessions on welding automation equipment, processes, and technologies for customers, internal staff, distributors, and partners.Support internal onboarding and upskilling initiatives related to lab equipment, new product launches, and application methods.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

Collaborate with product managers, engineering, marketing, and training teams to ensure technical capabilities align with business priorities and market needs.Assist in the creation of customer-facing content, including application guides, case studies, video tutorials, and webinar recordings.Work alongside marketing and product teams to support product launches and brand experience through technical content and lab-based demonstrations.Provide technical backup support to the field-based Welding Automation Process Specialist during peak demand or coverage gaps.

Qualifications:

Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in Welding Engineering, Welding Engineering Technology, or a related technical field is required.2+ years of experience in welding process development, applications engineering, or welding automation.Hands-on experience with advanced welding technologies and equipment in a lab or manufacturing setting.

Technical Skills

Strong understanding of welding theory, metallurgy, and material behavior across multiple processes.Proficiency in robotic welding systems, including programming (online or offline).Familiarity with waveform development, data acquisition tools, and weld monitoring technologies.Understanding of industrial automation components and their integration with welding systems is preferred.

Soft Skills

Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to present technical information clearly to diverse audiences.Comfortable interacting with engineers, operators, sales teams, and executive-level stakeholders.Ability to manage multiple projects and timelines simultaneously, with attention to detail and strong ownership.Collaborative, service-oriented, and proactive in identifying and solving application-related challenges.

Additional Requirements:

Travel up to 25% may be required, primarily for customer engagement, training events, and collaboration with field-based personnel.Regular on-site presence required at the Carol Stream, IL lab to support hands-on development, customer visits, and cross-functional team activity.

Compensation Information:

Salary Range: Welding Engineer - Miller Welding Automation compensation package offers a competitive annual salary with an estimated range of $71,000 to $110,000, the successful candidate’s qualification, and prior experience.
