The overall function of this position is to fabricate objects to augment or repair mobile equipment, bridge structures, marine vessels, and other Department assets by welding, brazing, grinding and cutting various metal components. This position is located in the Department of Transportation and Development District 07, Unit 071, and reports directly to the Welder Foreman. The incumbent must be self-motivated and be able to perform duties many times with or without minimal supervision and also be able to interpret unforeseen conditions as they may arise. The incumbent will participate in appropriate DOTD structured training programs and attend all continuing education classes and conferences deemed necessary to facilitate the performance of required tasks. While in official capacity, DOTD employees must comply with applicable Louisiana and Civil Service Laws, rules, and regulations, as well as DOTD policies, procedures, manuals, and directives. Minimum Qualifications Two years of experience or training in the welding trade; OR Completion of a Technical Diploma or Associate of Applied Science welding program from a Louisiana Technical or Community College or equivalent program from other institutions. Job Duties and Other Information Job Duties: + Fabricates brackets, racks, cages, braces, grates and other objects from steel and aluminum stock. + Uses steel shapes and plates in welding and brazing equipment such as bushhogs, excavation buckets, and other wear components. + Takes measurements and prepares sketches necessary to fabricate various objects. + Determines equipment and supplies needed according to the type of welding job required. + Operates a mobile welding machine to repair broken bridge members, marine vessels, equipment, vehicles, etc. in the field.
