**Summary:**
This position serves as a key leader for commercialization of research discoveries in the UNC School of Medicine and UNC Health Care System (“UNC Health”). Responsibilities assigned to this function include optimizing systems for entrepreneurship, new venture creation (i.e., spinouts), and helping inventors translate and commercialize intellectual property. The responsibilities also include developing strategic partnerships that maximize the value of the UNC School of Medicine and UNC Health’s translation and commercialization portfolio.
**Responsibilities:**
Commercialization of Inventions: Collaborates with UNC School of Medicine and UNC Health faculty, researchers, and units to accelerate spinning-out, including licensing, SOM/UNC Health inventions and startups. Identifies and develops productive partnerships between both private and non-profit/public sector entities that provide equity and/or proof of concept funding and/or awards for commercialization of university developed technology. Builds network of eco-system partners to source expertise in areas of design, prototyping, startup formation, accelerator services, and seed venture funding. Connects SOM/UNC Health inventors with eco-system partners to accelerate commercialization. Provides advocacy and leadership to ensure the organization’s research discoveries are leveraged positively to contribute to the economic development of the State of North Carolina. Provides faculty with oversight, direction, and integration into a variety of commercialization programs and projects. Works with others in UNC Health and SOM, especially the Chief Scientific Officer, Chief Strategy Officer, Vice President of UNC Health Enterprises, and Vice President of Corporate Development to align and coordinate efforts to develop partnerships and strategic relationships including with start-ups and other organization-sourced companies. Creates a UNC SOM/UNC Health commercialization playbook to support teammates navigating the commercialization process, including a map of the commercialization process at UNC SOM/UNC Health, available resources, relevant offices and departments, and other useful information.
Policy Management: Plans, optimizes, and unifies organizational policies, procedures and protocols that incentivize, reward, and enable teammates to work on translation and/or commercialization of ideas arising out of faculty research. Provides internal advocacy and leadership to ensure that research and resources are leveraged to positively contribute to the economic development of the State of North Carolina. Serves as a key advisor on issues of commercialization, entrepreneurship, and economic development. Works with the UNC Health strategy team to develop future plans for improving commercialization of SOM/UNC Health inventions. Ensures the organization benefits from a variety of viewpoints on critical decisions that prioritize commercialization and economic development needs in the region.
Leadership and Advocacy: Provides internal advocacy and leadership to ensure that research and resources are leveraged to positively contribute to the economic development of the State of North Carolina. Serves as a key advisor on issues of commercialization, entrepreneurship, and economic development. Works with the UNC Health strategy team to develop future plans for improving commercialization of SOM/UNC Health inventions. Ensures the organization benefits from a variety of viewpoints on critical decisions that prioritize commercialization and economic development needs in the region.

**Qualifications**
**Education Requirements:**
● Requires a Master’s degree or higher in an appropriate discipline.
**Licensure/Certification Requirements:**
● None required.
**Professional Experience Requirements:**
● Requires a minimum of twelve (12) years of experience with at least ten (10) years of people management experience. Requires background in commercialization and entrepreneurship.
**Knowledge/Skills/and Abilities Requirements:**
● Solves complex problems that may have a long-term impact on the business function/line of business.
● Develops innovative ideas and solutions with significance to the organization’s future.
● Identifies problem areas and skill gaps proactively and addresses them appropriately.
● Excellent project management and change management skills for designing and implementing Entity, Triangle, or System initiatives in a complex environment.
