The virtual observer works under the direction of a professional licensed nurse and provides in the continual observation of assigned patients to meet their safety needs. The first line of action is to verbally redirect the patient from engaging in at risk behaviors. Summons the nursing staff if the patient requires assistance.
ACCOUNTABILITIES

1. Functions as an active, cooperative member of the health care team conducting self in accordance with hospital safety policy, maintaining confidentiality of all information about patients. Consistently follows customer service standards while maintaining a cooperative team relationship with staff.
2. Observes and communicates all patient(s) changes or family concerns in safety needs, behavior, and activity to the appropriate licensed personnel. Shares pertinent information and behaviors with oncoming monitor staff to provide continuity of care.
3. Maintains visual contact with assigned patients at all times and responds to patient requests as able and refers others to the appropriate nurse. Coordinates breaks with the healthcare team to assure that continual observation is maintained. Never leave monitor station unattended.
4. Capable of continuous monitoring of assigned patients on one screen at one time and remains alert at all times while on duty. Ability to prioritize simultaneous situations.
5. Ability to communicate with hospital staff and respond quickly to patient behavioral changes. Identify patient care needs or emergency situations and notify appropriate personnel immediately to mitigate potential safety hazards.
6. Maintain appropriate documentation as required.
7. Ability to communicate effectively with patients using a microphone and headset, 2-way audio device.
8. Basic computer operation skills including, but not limited to Microsoft Windows experience. Demonstrates understanding and proficiency of the use of the AvaSys TeleSitter Solution software.
9. Demonstrates a safe work practices and attitude.
10. All other duties as assigned. Including but not limited to cross-training to subsequent roles within the ProMedica system.
Note: This position requires cross-training and holding a secondary role as a Patient Care Technician (PCT). Responsibilities in the PCT role include, but are not limited to: assisting with feeding, bathing, toileting, ambulation, obtaining vital signs, and providing care that may involve exposure to bodily fluids.
