The New York Times is seeking a video journalist to join a growing video team in New York focused on breaking news, live journalism and news video reporting.
The video journalist will stay on top of the news of the day—sourcing video clips for news stories, editing footage that takes the viewer to the scene for ongoing stories, as well as scripting and editing text-on-screen packages for our site and off-platform. You will be responsible for setting up and monitoring live video feeds, and work in collaboration with the desks across the newsroom to identify, verify, edit and publish video material in a variety of formats. In this role, you will also pitch relevant, visual and compelling stories for day turns and longer reported packages.
You are a strong editorial producer and are able to keep track of breaking news and ongoing stories. You can work under deadlines and thrive in a dynamic and fast-paced environment. We’re looking for a candidate who will relentlessly find the best video for a news story and has a track record of working on multiple projects at any given time.
This is an in-office position, based in New York City and includes regular attendance in the office four days each week. There may be some flexibility to work remotely per your departmental guidance.
Responsibilities:
Source footage, write scripts and edit breaking news video packages for our site and off-platform
Produce breaking news stories independently or in collaboration with colleagues across the newsroom
Pitch regularly and independently report on possible story opportunities
Use news wire services such as AP and Reuters to acquire material
Set up and monitor live feeds, adding text and graphics as needed
Find, verify and acquire user-generated content
Write succinct and effective headlines and summaries for video assets
Monitor the news day across core areas of coverage
Coordinate with the social team and social editors on the creation of news clips for social media
Experiment with different forms of vertical and mobile visual storytelling
Collaborate with visual editors to come up with social formats that align with Graphics, Video, Photo and Design teams
Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world
You will report to a Senior Producer
Basic Qualifications:
4+ years of proven journalism experience (preferably in a digital video or broadcast newsroom)
Proficient in Adobe Premiere Pro, able to edit quickly and accurately
Demonstrated understanding of the video production process
Demonstrated writing and researching skills
Social media platform expertise
Preferred Qualifications :
Experience with OSINT reporting techniques and UGC video verification
Ability to meet fast deadlines and adapt to a daily, unpredictable news production environment
Strong editorial judgment and writing skills, with a passion for finding original, visual journalism opportunities in competitive news moments
Thorough knowledge of global current events, with experience covering global news
A foundational knowledge of legal, ethical, copyright and usage issues for visuals
Well-versed in the world of social and digital media, with a keen eye on what competitors are doing and what new tools are being used
Willingness to work evenings and weekends as needed
Communicative and collaborative team player
