**Job Summary and Qualifications**
The Vice President, Medical Coding Automation & Documentation Technology Strategy is a senior executive leader responsible for identifying, defining, evaluating, and executing the enterprise strategy for medical coding automation and related documentation improvement technologies across hospital (facility) and physician (professional fee) services. Reporting to the HIMCAB CEO, this role drives the identification, selection, piloting, governance, and operationalization of advanced technologies, including AI-enabled autonomous coding and documentation improvement solutions to improve coding accuracy, efficiency, compliance, scalability, and financial performance.
This role partners closely with the executing coding leadership team, Clinical Documentation Integrity (CDI), IT, Compliance, CSG, DT&I and Revenue Cycle leadership to ensure solutions are strategically aligned, operationally effective, and sustainably deployed. The VP serves as a key innovation leader, translating emerging technology into measurable operational outcomes while ensuring adherence to regulatory and compliance standards.
**What you will do in this role:**
+ Define and lead the enterprise vision, strategy, and multi-year roadmap for medical coding automation across hospital and professional fee services.
+ Establish standards, governance, and best practices for evaluating, piloting, and scaling coding automation and documentation technologies.
+ Serve as executive sponsor for innovation initiatives related to AI-enabled coding, documentation quality, and workflow optimization.
+ Lead industry research, market scanning, and vendor evaluations for coding automation, and co-lead documentation improvement technologies.
+ Define business requirements, success criteria, and ROI frameworks for technology investment decisions.
+ Partner with IT, Compliance, DT&I, and Legal teams to ensure solutions meet enterprise, regulatory, and data governance standards.
+ Oversee structured pilots for new coding and documentation technologies, including success metrics, risk management, and change management plans.
+ Lead cross-functional teams to operationalize approved solutions, ensuring seamless integration into HIM, coding, CDI, and revenue cycle workflows.
+ Ensure consistent deployment standards and scalability across facilities, physician practices, and shared services environments.
+ Own accountability for technology performance post-implementation, including productivity gains, accuracy, quality, compliance, and financial impact.
+ Develop reporting and analytics to measure outcomes, adoption, and continuous improvement opportunities.
+ Drive optimization efforts to maximize value realization over the lifecycle of deployed technologies.
+ Act as a strategic liaison between coding operations, clinical stakeholders, IT, compliance, and executive leadership.
+ Establish and manage strategic vendor partnerships, including contract strategy, performance governance, and roadmap alignment.
+ Influence and align physician, operational, and executive stakeholders to ensure successful adoption and sustained engagement.
**What qualifications you will need:**
+ Bachelor’s degree required (or significant related work experience), in areas like HIM or Informatics. Master’s degree preferred.
+ Minimum 7 years acute care hospital coding experience required, coding quality experience preferred.
+ Minimum 10 years executive management/leadership and/or consulting experience required, preferably in a hospital related healthcare setting.
+ Experience with coding automation technologies preferred.
+ RHIA, RHIT and/or CCS preferred.
