Job Summary

The Office of New Student Programs (ONSP) is looking for a dynamic and passionate Veteran and Military Services Program Specialist to support and enhance military-connected student initiatives. In this role, you will be a key member of the ONSP team, with primary responsibilities for the Veteran and Military Services (VMS) Peer Advisor program, military-connected college transition, and other military-connected student initiatives supported by ONSP and the campus community. You will also be responsible for helping to create an inclusive and supportive environment that fosters successful transitions and a sense of belonging amongst the undergraduate military-connected student population.  

This position is best suited to a candidate who is familiar with the higher education landscape and is passionate about serving the needs of military-connected students.

Reporting to the Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Office of Enrollment Management (OEM) manages U-M's enrollment function to efficiently optimize students' experiences throughout their engagement, from prospect to alumni. The division collaborates with campus partners, faculty, and staff in support of the university's mission.

OEM comprises a dedicated team of more than 200 full-time staff members and up to 400 additional student and temporary staff and is structured in five operational units - the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, the Office of Financial Aid, the Office of New Student Programs, the Office of the Registrar, and OEM Administration. OEM strives to provide excellence in access and support to inspiring learners who will challenge the present and enrich the future.

Responsibilities*

50% Support and Delivery of Peer Mentoring Program and student staff supervision

Develop and deliver the VMS Peer Advisor program for veteran and military students, as well as paired mentoring program for military dependent students. Directly supervise, support, and develop a team of undergraduate and graduate students in the delivery of mentoring initiatives and program planning.Regularly assess, evaluate and adjust outreach strategies, administrative practices, and programming efforts each academic term using appropriate assessment tools and approaches.  Implement comprehensive strategies to recruit, select, and train student staff.Work with other professional staff members to coordinate shared programming, training and best practices for student mentorship.Contribute to the planning of and serve as on-site supervision for VMS program events and activities throughout the year

40% VMS program Support 

Assist in program communications concerning application, enrollment and VA benefit questions with potential students and family members efforts including monitoring the VMS email inbox, addressing inquiries, and escalating messages when necessaryAssist in the planning, development, and delivery of military-connected student events such as Veterans Week and other large scale programs. Facilitate in-person and virtual outreach opportunities for prospective studentsWork with the OEM Marketing and Communications team on monthly newsletters, staff selection, and other publications and advertisements.Contribute to the planning and facilitation of VMS activities and initiatives

5% Professional Development and Committee Engagement 

Participate in assigned committees within ONSP and OEMParticipate in and attend regional and/or national student affairs and military-connected student conferences and professional development offerings

5% Other Duties as Assigned

Contribute in ONSP Transition Services meetings, initiatives and program planningContribute in ONSP office-wide event planning and implementation. Required Qualifications*A bachelor's degree and one year of professional work experience required, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.Previous experience in student program planning and delivery of student servicesStrong attention to detail and organizational skills.Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.Must be a self-starter and exercise initiative, with the ability to work both independently and as a teamMust be able to set priorities, stay on task, and have the ability to plan out required work to meet deadlinesDemonstrated ability to work and interact effectively with students, families and department team membersComputer literacy with proficiency in MS office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) as well as Google Suite. Ability to work occasional evening and weekend eventsDesired Qualifications*A degree in Higher Education, Student Affairs, or a related fieldExperience working with transfer and non-traditional studentsExperience supervising undergraduate studentsExperience with event planning and facilitationPrior experience working with mentoring programs or similar student support programsPrior or current service in the United States Military or military-connected family membersUnderstanding of military service and military to student transitionModes of Work

Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment. Learn more about the work modes.

The Office of Enrollment Management requires a hybrid work arrangement of minimally three days on-site and two remote days. Thursdays are required as an on-site work day for all.  The schedule is subject to supervisor and OEM approval.
