Ventilation Technician
Position Description:
The Underground Ventilation Technician is responsible for ensuring effective airflow and environmental conditions throughout the underground mine. Working primarily underground on a daily basis, this position conducts routine ventilation surveys, monitors air quality, and supports the ongoing management and maintenance of the site’s ventilation systems. The incumbent will compile weekly ventilation reports, identify deficiencies, and collaborate with the Mine Operations and Technical Services teams to ensure compliance with regulatory and company standards for a safe working environment.
Responsibilities:
Conduct regular underground ventilation readings in all active headings, travel ways, and return airways as required by site procedures and regulations.Prepare and submit weekly ventilation reports summarizing readings, findings, and trends for review by the Ventilation Officer and Technical Services team.Identify and document ventilation deficiencies, preparing follow-up action items and liaising with Area Supervisors to ensure timely corrective measures.Conduct QA/QC inspections of installed ventilation controls such as fans, bulkheads, doors, and regulators, ensuring proper installation and performance.Assist in maintaining and updating the mine’s ventilation plans, including changes in development, ventilation circuits, or auxiliary installations.Perform monthly monitoring of the primary ventilation system and daily monitoring of the mine air heating system during winter months.Maintain and calibrate ventilation survey instruments and ensure the availability of functioning backup units.Support continuous improvement initiatives in underground environmental monitoring and airflow management.Assist in training and mentoring new team members on proper ventilation survey and monitoring techniques.Comply with all Occupational Health and Safety regulations, company standards, and safe work procedures.Perform other duties as assigned to support Technical Services and mine operations.
Qualifications:
Mining Engineering Technician Diploma, Mine Engineering Degree, or equivalent experience preferred.Minimum of 1–3 years’ experience in an underground mining environment, preferably in ventilation or technical services.Knowledge of underground ventilation systems, airflow measurement, and gas detection equipment.Familiarity with Deswik and Ventsim, or other ventilation modeling software considered an asset.Strong understanding of underground mining operations and environmental controls.Ability to work independently underground with minimal supervision.Physically capable of working in varied underground conditions, walking significant grades, and lifting up to 50 lbs.Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel) for data entry and report generation.Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to prepare clear and concise reports.Detail-oriented, safety-focused, and highly organized.Valid Class G driver’s licence required; ability to operate a manual vehicle considered an asset.
This is a residential position, requiring relocation or residence in the local community, on a 4 days on/3 days off schedule with 10-hour shifts.
