Utility Worker

Johnson Service Group is looking for a Utility Worker for our client in Fremont. Under close to general supervision and in compliance with CAL-OSHA regulations, the Utility Worker performs varied physical labor and semi-skilled duties in the construction, maintenance, and repair of underground water system facilities and equipment. This role responds to emergencies, performs basic repairs, inspects and services water meters, and supports general utility operations as assigned.
Responsibilities: Install, repair, and maintain water mains, service lines, fire hydrants, meters, and related infrastructure. Perform physical labor, including manual digging, rigging, loading/unloading materials, concrete mixing and placement, and assisting with truck maneuvering. Prepare and maintain job sites, tools, and equipment in a clean, safe, and orderly condition. Respond to off-hour emergencies and participate in rotating standby schedules. Observe and apply proper safety procedures; set up traffic devices and barricades; install trench shoring as directed. Learn to safely operate light and heavy equipment, including trucks, vacuum excavators, loaders, saws, tapping and valve machines, jackhammers, and hand/power tools. Tap water mains; install ductile iron, steel, copper, or plastic service lines; install industrial, commercial, or residential water meters. Locate valves, meters, hydrants, and related appurtenances using maps, sketches, and electronic devices; perform minor repairs on hydrants, valves, and meters. Perform basic maintenance, repair, testing, and replacement of water meters and control instruments under supervision. Assist with meter reading and temporarily cover for meter readers as needed. Complete standardized forms, maintain accurate records, and assist with system flushing, disinfection, and sampling. Support gardening or landscaping staff during peak periods, as needed. If certified, perform backflow testing and repairs. Perform other related duties as assigned. Education & Experience: High school diploma or equivalent. Minimum six months of experience performing heavy manual labor in construction, maintenance, or industrial settings. Valid California driver’s license and satisfactory driving record. Working Conditions & Physical Requirements: Work outdoors in various climates and geographic conditions. Perform duties in confined spaces, water, uneven/slippery surfaces, ladders, scaffolding, and around moving equipment. Exposure to high noise, dust, chemicals, fumes, smoke, grease, and oils.Potential use of a jackhammer or lift heavy objects. If you are not comfortable with jackhammer we will not require to use it. Repetitive use of hands and feet to operate tools, equipment, and vehicles. Good verbal communication, vision, and hearing for safe and effective work.
