Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) is inviting applications for a Temporary, Full-time (up to 12 months) position of Utility Operator 2 EMA / Service Truck with Infrastructure Maintenance & Operations, Public Works.

The Utility Operator 2 - Service Truck position encompasses a wide variety of general labour duties in various locations indoors and outdoors in various working conditions. To work in this position, you should enjoy driving and be able to function under minimal supervision. You must be alert, responsible, and self-motivated. An awareness of safety is important. You must also get along well with people, as drivers often deal directly with customers. You must have good map-reading skills and remain calm when driving in unfamiliar territory and navigating through congested city traffic.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:Responsible for the safe operation of any of the following equipment: 3 ton with or without trailers under 4500 kg, Compactor Trucks, ¾ ton, ½ ton and 1 ton;Responsible for responding to and eliminating various public hazards such as but not limited to: removing deceased animals from the right of way, removing debris from motor vehicle collisions, emptying litter receptacles;Responsible for monitoring a service phone and communicating with the corporate call center;Contribute to meeting the operational objectives of the business unit and HRMresponsible for enhanced service within the EMA as directed.Must attend work on regular basis;Must have ability to pass a Security Clearance and Child Abuse Registry; provide current Driver Abstract;Completion of daily work related written reports, such as but not limited to: pre & post trip vehicle inspections, service truck reports, commercial vehicle drivers’ hours of service, job site hazard assessments, etc;Communicate respectfully and constructively with the general public on a regular basis;Responsible for the care and maintenance of vehicles in his/her charge;Perform traffic control functions as required;Ability to participate in Winter Works Operations as per the CUPE 108 Collective Agreement; if required; including shift work.Must be able to work with minimal supervision;Must be willing and able to work in adverse weather conditions;Must be willing and able to attend employer directed training;Perform other related IMO duties as required.QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience: Grade 12 or equivalentValid Class 5 Nova Scotia Driver’s License with air brake endorsementMinimum of 2 years’ experience operating vehicles with a capacity greater than 3000 kg G.V.W.Good driving record (Registry of Motor Vehicle abstract will be required before a formal job offer is made)Compactor Truck qualified; or willing to obtain within 30 days of being awarded the position.Service Truck Operator trained, or willing to obtain within one (1) week of being awarded the position.Good attendance and work recordWHMIS, CPR/First Aid Certification or ability to successfully completeTechnical / Job Specific Knowledge and Abilities: Knowledge of garbage collection and disposal proceduresKnowledge of equipment cleaning standards and proceduresAbility to operate required equipment in a safe and responsible mannerAbility to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, as it relates to completing daily work related written reportsOrganization and planning skills as it relates to service requestsWill be lifting, pulling and managing heavy equipment and objectsSecurity Clearance Requirements: Applicants may be required to complete an employment security screening check.
Please note – Testing may be conducted as a component of the selection process to assess technical and job specific knowledge. Candidates who are selected for testing, may be tested in a group setting, scheduled at the employer’s discretion.
