Utility Operator 2 operates, maintains, and repairs black and clean utility systems. This position is also responsible for monitoring mechanical and electrical equipment, power distribution, chilled water, process gas, domestic and de-ionized water, water for injection (WFI), clean steam generator and distribution, plant steam boilers, compressed air, fire alarm, security, remote building equipment monitoring, sanitary, acid waste, and storm drain systems. Additionally, this role performs daily monitoring of tank farm, supports lab admin building, building management system (BMS) and critical alarm response.

Job Description

What You’ll Do

Operates and monitors utility systems, including compressed gases, cooling towers, plant steam, chillers, boilers, HVAC, fire alarm system, and utilities tank farmMonitors equipment performance, conducts routine maintenance, troubleshoots issues, and ensures compliance with safety and regulatory standardsAssists with analyzing data to identify areas of improvement, to implement energy saving measures, and to optimize utility usage to minimize costs and environmental impactPerforms basic and complex preventive maintenance on utility equipmentResponds to equipment failures promptlyResponds to emergency conditions, such as power outages, fire alarms, and critical equipment alarmsOperates and monitors site building management system (BMS) and Delta VPerforms and monitors chemical levels of boiler feed water, cooling tower water, and plant steam and adjusts water chemistry to maintain pre-established parametersMonitors and operates the site’s waste neutralization systemMonitors and maintains compressed gas inventoryEnsures utility systems and operations comply with relevant regulation standards and guidelinesMaintains accurate records and implements corrective actions to address non-compliance issues Participates in cross-department meetings and provides technical expertise, as directedAssists colleagues with the implementation of process improvements under the direction of senior technician or supervisorParticipates in continuous improvement initiatives to optimize utility operations, cost reductions, and efficiency enhancements Manages the inventory of spare parts and equipmentProvides guidance and mentors operators Provides input for the development of safety proceduresSupports site operations and emergency work orders during off-hours, as neededPerforms other duties, as assigned

Knowledge & Skills

Knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systemsAbility to operate hand and power toolsKnowledge of control systemsEffective communication, both written and oralAbility to work in a team environmentKnowledge of Lean Six Sigma methodologies or other continuous improvement techniquesMust be able to support 24/7 manufacturing facility, including shift, on-call and weekends

Required Skills

High School Diploma/GED2-4 years of experience in Utility Operations or a related field

Preferred Skills

Associate degree in mechanical, electrical, applied engineering, or industrial technologyPrior utility operations experience in a pharmaceutical manufacturing, or industrial environmentExperience with data tracking software, such as Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS)Experience using Microsoft OfficeLean Six Sigma

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements:

May work in Mechanical/Production spaces that may require hearing protection and enrollment in a hearing conservation program. Will work in environment operating a motor vehicle or Powered Industrial Truck.May be required to operate a pallet jackAbility to discern audible cues.Ability to inspect or perform a task with 20/20 corrected vision, visual acuity, including distinguishing color.Ability to ascend or descend ladders, scaffolding, ramps, etc.Ability to stand for prolonged periods of time - up to 60 minutesAbility to sit for prolonged periods of time - up to 60 minutesAbility to conduct activities using repetitive motions that include writs, hands and/or fingers.Ability to operate machinery and/or power tools.Ability to conduct work that includes moving objects up to 33 pounds.Ability to bend, push or pull, reach to retrieve materials from 18” to 60” in height, and use twisting motions.
