Position Title: Department Manager, Power & Recovery Mill

 

Primary Area of Responsibility The Department Manager, Power & Recovery Mill is responsible for the safety, environmental, and reliability performance of the Mill’s Power and Recovery Departments. The major assets managed include five power boilers, four steam turbine generators, mill water intake and clarification, two recovery boilers, lime kiln and recausticizing areas, NCG incinerator and four evaporators. This position will assist the area Superintendents in leading a team with the purpose of maximizing asset availability and efficiency without impacting safety or environmental performance. 

 

Primary Job Duties:

Safety

Actively promotes and participates in all elements of the safety program, encouraging involvement from crew members in current safety programs. Understands and enforces Covington Mill safety policies and procedures; ensuring that all department personnel are aware of and adhere to safety policies and procedures.Initiates accident/incident investigation in the Power and Recovery areas.Performs audits and addresses deficiencies in housekeeping and safety related inspections.Leads DMS meetings with general safety discussion and solicits input from department personnel.Maintain BLRBAC standards and compliance

 

General

Manage production resources and interface with other departments to maintain efficient Power and Recovery operations.Participation in the daily operations meeting, reporting on safety, quality, productivity, and environmental concerns.Manage performance, and development of department employeesEnsure proper company/union relations according to current labor contract.Administers the capital budget for the Power and Recovery department. Works with department supervisors and engineers to establish priorities.Actively promotes use of Daily Management System (DMS) guidelines.Implementation of recommendations to help improve cost and quality.Minimize unexpected downtime in the Power and Recovery areas by effective maintenance planning.Efficiently plan scheduled outages between the Fiberline, Recovery, Power, and Paper machines.Lead cost reduction efforts for areas of responsibility, sponsoring projects from annual mill diagnostic in the department.Manage operating and maintenance costs within the budget.Understand and abide by environmental policies established by SW, the state of Virginia and Federal environmental laws.Responsible that all employees understand and utilize all safety requirements of job functions; in addition to use all required PPE during job tasks.  Position requires full knowledge of safety requirements and ensure compliance and accountability.  Working knowledge all safety procedures (including LOTO, fall protection, confined space entry, hot work and JHA for each position, proper guarding, seat belts, dock locks, etc.).  Employee must follow standard work procedures and safe work. 

 

Skills, Knowledge, and Competencies:

A college degree is strongly recommended or a minimum of 10 years of supervisory experience in a related position.Experience with Power and Recovery operations.Experience with water treatment plant operations.General understanding of mill wide operations and interdependency.Understanding the Covington Mill Quality Policy and Environmental Policy.Communicate clearly and effectively with all levels of the organization.Clearly define objectives/KPIs and be effective in the achievement of those objectives.Must be dedicated to continuous improvements in the Power and Recovery departments with special emphasis on safety, quality, environment, production, and cost.

 

Other Position Requirements

Available, as needed, outside of normal working hours if departmental or mill issues arise.Call and weekend duty required Candidates are required to undergo a drug screening after receiving a conditional job offer, but before starting employment.
