Job Summary Job SummaryThe Upper School Life Science Teacher plays an integral role in delivering engaging, rigorous, and student-centered instruction in Life Science courses including Biology and AP Environmental Science. This position supports the academic and social-emotional development of students in grades 9 –12 and is responsible for building meaningful connections between classroom instruction, real-world applications, and the broader mission of the school. The ideal candidate is an innovative educator with experience differentiating instruction and fostering a dynamic learning environment. ESSENTIAL DUTIES: Teaching & Instruction • Deliver high-quality instruction in Life Science courses, including Biology and AP Environmental Science. • Use student-centered teaching strategies that promote active inquiry, critical thinking, and scientific literacy. • Integrate current events, case studies, and interdisciplinary themes into the curriculum where appropriate. • Implement varied assessment strategies to evaluate student learning and adjust instruction accordingly. • Maintain an organized, engaging, and safe laboratory and classroom environment. • Regularly collaborate with grade-level and departmental colleagues to ensure curricular alignment. Student Support & Engagement • Foster a supportive classroom climate that encourages student voice, respect, and academic growth. • Serve as an advisor and mentor to a group of Upper School students, supporting their academic progress and personal development. • Provide timely and constructive feedback to students and parents regarding progress and achievement. • Communicate clearly and consistently with families and colleagues. Preferred • Master’s degree in biology, Science Education, or related field. • Clear California Single Subject Teaching Credential in Science. • Teaching experience in grades 9–12. • Experience in independent schools. The position requires the ability to move around campus, facilitate lab demonstrations, and support students in both indoor and outdoor learning environments. The teacher must be able to lift up to 25 pounds (e.g., lab equipment), use a computer for extended periods, and demonstrate auditory and visual acuity to engage with students effectively. Occasional evening and weekend hours may be required for events or professional development.
