Role Summary Internship Term: Rivian internships are experiences optimized for student candidates. To be eligible, you must be an undergraduate or graduate student in an accredited program during the internship term with an expected graduation date between December 2025 through December 2027. Note that if your university has specific requirements for internship programs, it is your responsibility to fulfill those requirements. In this role, you will join a collaborative team supporting the development, design, and implementation of mechanical solutions for electronic control unit (ECU) testing. This internship targets master's students with some prior industry experience who are seeking hands-on exposure to mechanical design of electronic test automation systems for next-generation electric vehicles. This opportunity will provide an introduction to the mechanical aspects of electronics test automation in a rapidly evolving EV technology environment. Responsibilities Support the design and documentation of modular mechanical fixtures and interfaces to facilitate the testing of automotive ECUs. Assist with building, assembling, and integrating mechanical solutions into test systems under guidance from senior team members. Help prepare clear engineering drawings, BOMs, and standard operating procedures for new test solutions. Participate with vendors and internal teams during purchasing, assembly, and commissioning of test setups. Communicate effectively with technicians to ensure accurate implementation of test equipment. Qualifications Must be currently pursuing a bachelors, masters, or PhD degree at the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign (Masters degree preferred) Actively pursuing a degree or one closely related in Mechanical Engineering Proficiency in 3D CAD design tools such as SolidWorks, CATIA. Prior industry experience (through internship, co-op, or employment) in a relevant engineering discipline. Previous experience in automotive, electronics, semiconductor, or related industries, preferred. Basic understanding of electrical circuits, schematics, and ability to navigate PCB layouts and manufacturer data sheets. Familiarity with mechanical design of custom test fixtures, interfaces, or prototype hardware. Strong organizational skills: able to create and maintain diagrams, bills of materials (BOMs), and support documentation. Effective verbal and written communication for cross-functional teamwork. Exposure to electronics testing technologies (e.g., fixtures, harnessing, probing) preferred. Coursework or internship projects supporting automated test equipment, either in a research or manufacturing context, preferred. Awareness of vehicle communication protocols (e.g., CAN, LIN, Automotive Ethernet) preffered. Exposure to automation instrumentation such as programmable power supplies, DMMs, or signal generators, preferred. #LI-HH2 Pay Disclosure Salary Range/Hourly Rate for Internships: The range of pay for internships is 25.00-51.00 per hour. Actual compensation will be determined based on location, and other factors permitted by law. Coverage is effective on the first day of employment, and Rivian covers most of the premiums.
