UG – Safety and Safety Superintendent
Position Description
Bulyanhulu Gold Mine is seeking to recruit a UG – Safety and Safety Superintendent to join and grow our team. The purpose is to contribute on a practical note to ensure activities in the Occupation Health and Safety department are effectively planned and undertaken in a safe and cost effective manner to achieve targets in accordance to BGML Mining Safety Standards, Policies and Procedures and ensure daily targets are met.

Responsibilities:
Develop the knowledge, skills and abilities of employees and associated personnel in accordance with organizational policies and procedures.
Provide support and assistance to the site for the resolution of safety and environmental issues and champion the consistent promotion of organizational policies, procedures and objectives and comply with organization safety reporting standards.
Ensure compliance to leading indicators and execution of required leadership interaction with departments.
Continuously improve the safety and training culture of the site.
Ensure site associated personnel receive safety training and assessments that meet the competency requirements of Bulyanhulu systems.
Deliver compliance to training plan / schedules in collaboration with line management.
Underground Mining and Technical Training System
Co-ordinate and Deliver Mobile Equipment, Drilling and Blasting and any other skills training sessions in line with the Bulyanhulu underground training needs analysis for specific roles.
Compliance with the Training and Development related standard operating procedures.
Complete on the job follow up and field assessments as per the Safety, Environmental, Quality and Training Management Plan.
Responsible for managing safe working behaviours of the reliability team, demonstrating a high regard for personal and team health and safety performance, sustaining a zero overdue status of investigations and actions.
Develop competency and capability to ensure a skilled workforce is developed for underground roles. Identify training requirements, develop and schedule training needs, monitor and maintain training records for the underground workforce.
Development and implementation of safety systems, procedures, standards and initiatives in order to establish high operating and performance standards in the UG Mine.
Identify improvement opportunities in work processes to reduce risk exposures to personnel. Implement value adding initiatives through structured change management processes.
Ensure all site incidents, investments, workplace injuries and related documentation are managed and completed in line with existing standards and procedures.
Ensure site compliance to company and site standards, relevant local and national legislation.
Develop and implement site induction processes for Underground personnel and visitors.
Implement and manage underground work area inspection and task observation programs.
Manage communication formally report as needed for HSEQ accountabilities.
Ensuring that the Underground department complies with the environmental management system (EMS) in line with ISO 14001: 2015
Ensuring that all services and operations are undertaken with due regard to the AGA OHS policy and standards in line with ISO 45001: 2018 System, IMIU and ICMI code Requirement.
Provide coaching supports to Underground HSE Reps by initiating programs that will ensure their participating and skills growth in managing the OHS risks in their respective Ares.
Coordinating department & contractors, month safety meetings.
Facilitate the awareness of the safe mining working procedure to all team in the Underground Mining Operation.
Ensure Underground rescue teams have capability and resources to manage any underground emergency including fire risks associated with UG mining operations.
Ensure all performance reviews are conducted
Ensure Training and Development plans in place for people under his responsibility
Provide coaching and mentoring to team members
Ensure updated job descriptions updated and relevant
Hold all levels accountable for meeting leading indicator targets (FLRA’s Reporting, Pre-use Inspection, CCV’s, PTOs) from Team Leaders & Above.
Ensure alignment of safety KPIs with organizational objectives, focusing on a proactive safety culture.
Conduct regular reviews with section heads on safety performance metrics and ensure that corrective actions are followed through.
Ensure risk registers are updated in the regular based
Ensure SWI/SOP are updated annually.
Ensure the compliance regarding Management of Change Procedure
Create any SOP’s or SWI’s needed for work to be completed safely.
Monitor on-the-job training programs and ensure that all safety roles are clearly defined and understood across the organization.
Reinforce safety culture through participation in safety committee meetings, audits, and strategic safety initiatives.
Lead by example through regular engagement in CCV’s, PTO, and field inspections, demonstrating a personal commitment to health and safety.
Comply with the incident alert protocol established on site
Comply with Occupational Health and Hygiene (OHH) protocol and recommendation on site
Comply with yearly annual medical checkup procedure for all safety personnel.
Qualification Requirements:
Degree or Advanced Diploma in Occupational Health & Safety
Degree in other disciplines with a Diploma in Occupational Health & Safety
Certificate IV in Training & Assessment
Risk management experience
Qualified Auditor
Qualified Investigator
Industrial Hygiene & Vector control knowledge
Formal Mines Rescue Training.
Experience and Skills Requirements:
10 years’ experience in the Mining/extraction industry or processing, manufacturing, or building and construction industry (Mining more specific)
5 Years Supervisory / Leadership Experience
7 OHS senior/Supervisor level Coordinator or equivalent?
