Kibali Gold Mine is seeking to recruit a Development Manager to join and grow our team. This role is responsible to oversee and direct all activities related to the development of underground mining operations, ensuring safe, efficient, and cost-effective construction and maintenance of underground infrastructure.

Responsibilities:

Provide visible and effective safety leadership across all underground development activities, ensuring fatal risk controls, safe work practices, and disciplined field leadership are prioritised over production outcomes.

Own, implement, and enforce underground development standards, including ground support, drill and blast, excavation quality, and service and ventilation installations, ensuring long-term mine stability.

Ensure all development is delivered in accordance with design intent, geotechnical recommendations, and approved management plans, with structured control and approval of any deviations.

Lead, mentor, and develop competent underground leadership teams, including superintendents, shift bosses, and supervisors, while building sustainable local workforce capability through training and succession planning.

Convert life-of-mine and rolling schedules into safe, achievable development plans, aligned with ground conditions, services, ventilation, and equipment availability.

Monitor and manage planned versus actual performance, using safety, quality, and productivity indicators to drive corrective actions without increasing risk.

Manage contractors and OEMs to ensure safe execution, quality workmanship, and compliance with site standards, with performance measured beyond metres delivered.

Provide clear governance, risk visibility, and performance reporting to site and corporate leadership, including emerging safety, ground control, and delivery risks.

Drive continuous improvement and a strong underground safety culture through consistent field presence, accountability, and elimination of high-risk tasks.

 

Duties:

Lead by example in safety leadership, ensuring compliance with site safety standards, statutory requirements, company policies, and ISO 14001 / 45001 standards.

Conduct underground inspections and ensure hazards, incidents, and near misses are investigated with effective corrective actions implemented.

Lead, coach, and mentor supervisors to reinforce strong safety leadership and operational discipline.

Lead and manage underground development activities in line with the approved mine plan.

Deliver short- and medium-term development plans with executable schedules, efficient resourcing, and budget alignment.

Prioritise daily development activities to ensure safe, efficient, and disciplined execution.

Ensure accurate forecasting and cost control of development consumables within approved budgets.

Monitor performance against plan and budget, driving efficiencies and implementing corrective actions.

Oversee drilling, blasting, mucking, and haulage to achieve development targets.

Coordinate with engineering, planning, maintenance, and supply chain teams to align execution and forecasts.

Ensure safe, efficient utilisation of underground equipment and supporting infrastructure.

Review shift reports and performance data to ensure accuracy and actionable insight.

Identify and implement continuous improvement initiatives to enhance safety, productivity, and cost performance.

 

Qualification Requirements:

A Bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering or a related field is preferred, however, extensive underground mining experience in a similar leadership capacity may be considered in lieu of formal qualifications.

 

Experience and Skills Requirements:

10+ years’ experience in underground mining, with a minimum of 5 years in a senior operational or leadership role focused on development activities.

Proven experience managing underground development teams and meeting production targets in challenging conditions.

Strong familiarity with Sandvik DD421 and DD422i jumbo development techniques, including optimal utilization and maintenance considerations.

Demonstrated expertise in underground infrastructure planning, including ventilation, dewatering, ground support, and utilities to support efficient development.

Leadership experience in coaching, mentoring, and developing frontline supervisors and technical professionals.

Solid understanding of mine planning and scheduling requirements.

Experience in remote site operations or FIFO rosters and working with multicultural teams is desirable.
