Turnaround Mechanical Planner - Fixed Equipment & Piping

Airswift is looking for a TAR Mechanical Planner in El Dorado, KS for a 9-month contract (Turnaround Preparation + Execution + Closeout)

The Mechanical Planner will support turnaround planning activities for fixed equipment and piping within the Refinery. This role is responsible for developing high-quality job packages, ensuring work is well-scoped, cost-effective, and fully aligned with refinery safety and quality standards. The ideal candidate has strong refinery experience, detailed knowledge of mechanical and piping systems, and a proven background planning work in turnaround environments.
Responsibilities: Develop complete job plans and work packages for fixed equipment and piping, including scope, materials, labor estimates, tools, drawings, and execution steps. Create detailed work plans for equipment such as pressure vessels, heat exchangers, storage tanks, piping systems, pumps, and rotating equipment interfaces. Review engineering drawings, P&IDs, isometrics, and vendor documentation to support accurate scope definition. Identify required permits, safety considerations, scaffold needs, craft disciplines, and equipment isolation requirements. Build job plans in the refinery’s CMMS (SAP or equivalent) according to turnaround planning standards.
Turnaround Readiness & Coordination Support development of the T/A schedule by providing accurate sequencing, durations, and manpower projections. Walk down field jobs with operations, maintenance, engineering, and contractors to validate scope and identify constraints. Work closely with the T/A Superintendent, Planners, Schedulers, and Execution Teams to ensure alignment of job scope and execution strategy. Assist in developing materials lists, procurement requests, and staging plans to ensure readiness for turnaround execution.
Materials, Procurement & Cost Control Identify materials, specialty tools, contractor needs, and long?lead items. Coordinate with procurement to ensure availability of materials and services prior to execution. Provide accurate labor and cost estimates for all planned work.
Field Support During Execution Provide planning and technical support during the turnaround execution window. Address scope changes, emergent work, and field challenges quickly and efficiently. Update job plans and documentation based on field conditions and execution feedback.
Documentation & Closeout Ensure all job packages, redlines, and documentation are complete and accurate for turnover to operations. Support post?T/A reviews, lessons learned, and continuous improvement initiatives.
Requirements: 5+ years refinery experience in maintenance, mechanical planning, or turnaround roles. Turnaround planning experience with fixed equipment and piping. Strong understanding of refinery safety standards, mechanical codes, and best practices (API, ASME, etc.). Proficient in reading P&IDs, isometric drawings, equipment datasheets, and engineering packages. Experience creating detailed job plans, labor estimates, and materials lists. Ability to work effectively with operations, engineering, contractors, and turnaround leadership. Preferred Experience supporting turnarounds in a refinery or petrochemical environment specifically. Familiarity with SAP, Primavera P6, or similar planning/scheduling systems. Knowledge of company’s turnaround processes (if previously onsite). API certifications (510/570/653) or mechanical trade background is a plus.
Soft Skills Strong communication skills with the ability to work across multi-disciplinary teams. Highly organized, detail-oriented, and capable of working in a fast-paced turnaround environment. Proactive problem-solver with strong field presence and ability to adapt during execution.
