ABOUT THE JOB: Under general direction, dispatches and supervises bus drivers assigned to transporting students on regular and special schedules; plans and coordinates the district’s bus routes and transportation schedules; ensures the smooth and efficient operation of the district’s transportation services; and performs related work as assigned.

JOB DUTIES: Creates routes and dispatches drivers in accordance with established schedules and fulfills special transportation requests; continuously monitors and adjusts school bus drivers' assignments to ensure each driver works a seven-hour schedule; provides guidance to school bus drivers to ensure that schedules are met and route sheets are kept current; communicates with school bus drivers regarding schedule or route changes, vehicle breakdowns, accidents, emergencies, road conditions, road hazards, and other concerns; researches maps and locations to provide school bus drivers with information and directions to various destinations; makes route recommendations to provide maximum and efficient utilization of buses, route length, traffic pattern variability, and ride times; evaluates routes for safety; inspects school buses for general housekeeping and cleanliness; prepares school bus driver performance evaluations; checks mileage to establish authorized bus stops; confers with parents, teachers, principals, and other district personnel regarding routes, schedules, and student management on buses; communicates with the special education department and outside vendors regarding co-curricular and special education transportation; uses applicable office and routing software to compile correspondence, reports, bus route sheets, and other materials; maintains and troubleshoots the applicable routing software by: editing routing and map information; designing and modifying routes; reviewing, researching, and correcting student data; ensuring that routing-related data is accurate (such as calendars, bell schedules, stops, and school track information); maintains cost, mileage, and related records; assigns substitute school bus drivers; attends trainings to keep current on all rules and regulations in the student transportation field; and may drive a school bus as needed.

Employment Standards

Education and Experience: Graduation from high school or equivalent. Any combination equivalent to two years of school bus driving experience or two years of experience as a dispatcher in student transportation.

LICENSE:  Must possess and maintain a valid Class A or Class B California Driver License with a passenger and school bus endorsement and remain insurable at the standard insurance market rate.
 
CERTIFICATE:  Must possess and maintain a valid School Bus Driver Certificate issued by the California Highway Patrol. Must possess and maintain a valid First Aid and CPR certificate or pass the California Highway Patrol First Aid exam.

A SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE REQUIRES THE FOLLOWING....

Knowledge of: California laws and codes and district policies applicable to school bus drivers; practices and procedures for dispatching student transportation vehicles; principles and practices of supervision, training, and evaluation; applicable office and routing software; principles and techniques for route scheduling; district boundaries; telephone technique and etiquette; and record-keeping techniques.

Ability to: Supervise and evaluate the work of others; learn and interpret district regulations and the laws and regulations of the California Department of Education and the California Highway Patrol governing the transportation of students by school bus; schedule transportation services; review routes and schedules to accommodate changes; use applicable office and routing software effectively; maintain records and prepare reports; follow oral and written instructions; communicate effectively by two-way radio; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; use sensitivity, tact, diplomacy, and discretion; communicate effectively with parents, teachers, the public, principals, and other district staff, particularly in stressful situations; and develop and meet schedules and timelines.
