This role is in support of Cencora's wholesale distribution services in Europe operating through our Alliance Healthcare business.

Position Summary
This is a truly exciting opportunity to be part of Alliance Healthcare UK's new, next-generation Central Logistics Centre (CLC). You will play a pivotal role in the launch, continuous improvement and ongoing success of this world-class, game-changing facility. Designed with advanced automation and cutting-edge robotics, the CLC is set to redefine how Alliance Healthcare manages and delivers medical, health and beauty products to our customers across the UK.
 

The Transport General Manager will oversee all aspects of the various transport operations, aligning high levels of operational performance with clearly defined strategic goals. The highest priority is ensuring delivery of a safe and legally compliant transport function. This will also include, but not be limited to, driving improvements in standardisation of process, service performance, cost-efficiency, optimisation of routes, lanes and flows, management of legal compliance requirements, whilst also working collaboratively with warehouse operations and team members.

The role holder will progress team development and career progression through clear leadership and support and will include responsibility for multi – site transport operations following the CLC go-live.

Principal Accountabilities:

Operational Leadership

Oversee the daily transport operations at designated Service Centres, ensuring they are managed effectively through the agreed structure at each site.

Lead transport change projects to support design and implementation.

Ensure effective and auditable business resilience plans are in place and tested regularly

Manage the Union relationship on site at the CLC and other sites understanding the importance of building positive and mutually beneficial relationships with these key stakeholders.

Implement operational strategies to improve productivity and efficiency in line with company requirements.

Identify, monitor, and manage systemic and operational improvements through best practices across the network.

Focus on delivering enhanced services to both internal and external customers.

People Leadership

Lead team development and succession planning

Lead, mentor and develop team members in supporting the People Plan and team member life cycle through the use of the HR business model.

Support the growth and development of individual team members through succession planning and Personal Development Plan (PDP) management.

Ensure that sites are appropriately structured and staffed to meet operational needs.

Taking the lead with confidence and being dependable during times of disruption.

Proactive and independent minded in managing your own personal development, understanding the importance of continuous self-development and role model this within your team.

Support teams to achieve business participation levels in employment engagement surveys and to utilise the results to deliver the transport action development plans.

Conduct performance reviews and provide timely feedback to all team members

Foster an inclusive and supportive team environment by promoting diversity, respecting individual differences, and ensuring all team members feel valued and empowered to contribute to the success of Cencora Alliance Healthcare.

Health and Safety and ESG

Champion and lead the health and safety culture which ensures safe processes, procedures and behaviours as well as continuous improvement through best practice activities.

Working with the H&S Leader conduct regular safety audits and risk assessments

Ensure the highest standards of safety for individual team members are developed, implemented, and maintained. This should align with the company-wide Target Zero Health and Safety (H&S) policies.

Ensure a culture of being safe, legal, compliant and continuous improvement.

Support the delivery of the business environmental strategy – including innovations in vehicle technology, alternative fuels and operating practices

Compliance with Operating Standards

Ensure all operating standards are achieved and maintained by adhering to company policies and procedures related to Transport. This includes compliance with relevant DVSA, MHRA, Environmental Health (EH), and Health and Safety (H&S) legislation, in collaboration with internal and external departments.

Accountable for compliance adherence

Ensuring all operations adhere to relevant regulations, including driver and vehicle compliance, health and safety standards, and environmental regulations.

KPI

Develop, implement, and maintain financial and Key Performance Indicator (KPI) budget targets for Service Centre Transport operations. Ensure these targets are met within agreed timelines.

Monitor key performance indicators (KPI’s) and operational metrics to drive performance against service, compliance, productivity and cost in line with targets and where relevant ensure the implementation of actions to reverse identified areas of under-performance.

Identify opportunities for process improvements and implement best practices.

Be responsible for the correct headcount to maintain both service and productivity measures in transport.

Financial Accountability

Managing budgets, controlling costs, and ensuring efficient resource allocation.

Develop and manage the budget for transport at the CLC, ensuring cost control and financial efficiency.

Prepare regular reports on operational and financial performance for senior management.

Monitor expenses, purchase orders and invoicing is well controlled to ensure cost-effective operations.

Stakeholder Engagement

This includes contributing to projects and sustainability programmes that align with the company’s future goals and requirements.

Responsible to build and maintain strong collaborative working relationships and communicate clearly with internal and external stakeholders across a variety of levels with the confidence to challenge and influence.

Flexible thinking, face into difficult conversations with confidence, making decisions efficiently and handling change to ensure everything we do is right for all stakeholders.

Ensuring the customer is at the centre of every decision-making process so we unite around them.

Building and maintaining strong relationships with customers, addressing their needs, and identifying growth opportunities

Communication Channels

Establish and maintain effective communication channels across the network.

Ensure all relevant parties are involved and that communication links are developed across departments within all Service Centre sites.

Key Dimensions:

Direct reports – 1- 6 direct reports

Works internally, externally & across divisions/sectors

Headcount – 250+ indirect reports

Budget - £12m per annum

Additional Information:

Some UK travel required, with overnight stays and attendance at meetings or conventions outside of normal business hours, including some evenings and weekends.

Full driving licence required

All people leader roles within the Central Logistics Centre will need to be “on call” for emergency orders.

All people leader roles within the Central Logistics Centre will need to participate a weekend working rota.

Responsibility for transport operations at other sites may be required  

.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience Required:  

Previous experience of managing a fast-moving, high-volume multi-site distribution network

Experience of Wholesale & Retail Temperature Controlled Transport Operations

Experience in managing large numbers of team members and vehicles within compliance and safety guidelines

Experience of working in a highly customer-focussed environment

CPC or similar qualification would be required

Demonstrates the ability to develop and communicate a clear vision for the future and proven experience of driving significant change projects.

Knowledge of regulatory compliance and quality standards in pharmaceutical distribution.

Excellent knowledge in Microsoft tools including Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Teams.

Experience with “Lean” or “Six Sigma” methodologies.

Essential Requirements:

Leadership, proven experience of leading a function within an organisation, with evidence of building a cohesive team.

Proven experience of leading multiple/ complex activities to deliver the strategic plan.

Ensuring transport site security standards are to the expected standard and maintained through engagement through the National Security Manager.

Excellent clear and engaging communicator, strong verbal and written English, and will use a variety of methods to keep the team well informed on all important matters.

Strong personal influencing and consultative skills.

Work well under pressure and ‘can do’ attitude.

High attention to detail which translates into strong, accurate process and achievement of targets.

Ability to carry out complex negotiations and having the composure and ability to adapt to stressful situations

Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.

Adaptable with a demonstrated capability to embrace and overcome new challenges.
