Depending on the desired qualifications of the successful applicant, the hiring manager may elect to fill this position at the higher Transmission Nuclear Substation Tech II level within the job hierarchy.

This is the first craft level of the Nuclear Substation Technician hierarchy.  A Nuclear Substation Technician I will assist a higher-level technician and sometime safely lead in activities associated with nuclear substation maintenance activities. Incumbents are expected to develop technical and leadership skills and the ability to work independently and lead small activities with low to moderate levels of complexity.

Substation Technician I performs the following with Minimal Oversight: 

Demonstrate a complete understanding of company safety rules and work practices and of substation equipment isolation and clearances and grounding practices

Demonstrate a complete understanding of Human Performance practices

Clear understanding of nuclear regulatory compliance and adheres to Duke and nuclear policies and procedures to meet regulatory requirements (NRC, NERC and/or SERC)

Basic ability to safely lead small low risk maintenance activities and work independent of direct leadership

Basic understanding of AC and DC circuit principles and reading prints and schematics

Demonstrate the ability to methodically/logically organize substation work activities 

Demonstrate the ability to operate material handling, bucket, and man lift aerial devices

Understands limitations, never assumes, and will STOP to seek help

Basic understanding of power factor, winding resistance, circuit breaker timing, and interpret results

Basic ability to complete maintenance/construction activities on all substation equipment including but not limited to switches, circuit breakers, transformers, PT's, CT's, CCVT's and grounding systems

Basic understanding of electrical, mechanical, pneumatic and hydraulic systems

Demonstrates advanced verbal and written communications skills

Key Skills and Abilities:

Demonstrated ability to pass all required nuclear maintenance worker training

Demonstrated ability to pass panel review by meeting or exceeding requirements for step progression

Demonstrated availability for after- hours work, call outs, extended workdays and weekends

Demonstrated ability to travel for out-of-town work on the system possibly up to four weeks.

Advanced understanding of job-related, technical and professional knowledge, skills and performance

Has positive working relationships and can effectively coordinate work activities

Provides lower level of leadership

Ability to lift and carry 50 lbs.

Must be capable of working from and on elevated work surfaces and aerial devices up to 100 feet

Ability to work in a diverse environment with individuals from various socio-economic and cultural backgrounds

Demonstrate the ability to develop leadership skills

Minimum Requirements for Trans Nuclear Switchyard Tech I

Must have a valid State Driver’s License and the ability to obtain a CDL Class A Driver’s License

High School diploma or equivalent and minimum 3 years Transmission or Distribution maintenance or construction experience or equivalent job-related experience

Minimum Requirements for Trans Nuclear Switchyard Tech II

Must have a valid State Driver’s License and the ability to obtain a CDL Class A Driver’s License

High School diploma or equivalent and minimum 5 years Transmission or Distribution maintenance or construction experience or equivalent job-related experience

​Desired:

Associate Degree in Engineering Technology or equivalent experience or training (e.g. military)

Computer and software skills including Outlook e-mail, Microsoft Word, Excel spreadsheets etc.

Must have a permanent residence within 60 minutes from their base location

Working Conditions

Demonstrated ability to travel for out-of-town work on the system possibly up to four weeks

Demonstrated availability for after-hours work and call out rotation

Ability to lift and carry 50 lbs.

Ability to work in a diverse environment with individuals from various socio-economic and cultural backgrounds

Must be capable of working on elevated work surfaces

This position contains a weight restriction of 275 pounds as an essential function of the job. The purpose of this restriction is to ensure that all weight rated equipment is used in an appropriate and safe manner within maximum allowed weight loading.

This position is based out on North and South Carolina.

Field Mobility Classification – Work will be performed in various field locations, as needed, after the onboarding period. However, field employees are required to live within a reasonable daily commute to their assigned work location

Specific Requirements:

Must have a valid State Driver’s License and the ability to obtain a CDL Class A Driver’s License

This position contains a weight restriction of 275 pounds as an essential function of the job. The purpose of this restriction is to ensure that all weight rated equipment is used in an appropriate and safe manner within maximum allowed weight loading.

Must have a permanent residence approximately sixty minutes from their base location

Ability to pass any required background check for NERC/CIP/Nuclear compliance

Must pass appropriate level of Duke aptitude test

Demonstrated ability to pass all required nuclear maintenance worker training

Demonstrated ability to pass panel review by meeting or exceeding requirements for step progression
