The University of Virginia (UVA) invites applications for a Transfer Counselor who will support and empower students from the Virginia Community College System (VCCS) as they navigate their transfer journey to UVA. This student-centered professional will play a critical role in building pathways, removing barriers, and ensuring a smooth transition for prospective transfer students—particularly those eligible for Federal Pell Grants.
Position Summary
Reporting to the Director of Community College Partnerships, the Transfer Counselor will engage directly with students and collaborate across departments to enhance access, support, and success for incoming transfer students.
The Enrollment division at UVA includes the Office of Undergraduate Admission, the Office of the University Registrar, Student Financial Services, and Commonwealth Partnerships. The Transfer Counselor will join engaged, innovative colleagues working collaboratively to compete for talented students from all walks of life and to care for students from their first interaction with the University through Final Exercises and beyond.
Responsibilities
1. Student Advising & Engagement
Provide individualized advising to prospective PVCC transfer students on academic options, admission requirements, and student life at UVA.
Develop and implement outreach programs that increase awareness of the full range of opportunities available at all of UVA’s undergraduate schools, and that help PVCC students explore and identify opportunities they consider good matches for their interests, talents, and aspirations.
Serve as a guide throughout the transfer process—from application preparation to post-admission success planning.
Connect students to relevant PVCC and UVA resources for a seamless transition.
Coordinate the Piedmont Scholars Program, supporting Piedmont Virginia Community College students pursuing transfer.
As part of the broader UVA Enrollment transfer team, interact with prospective students across the VCCS system and provide information and guidance.
2. Transfer Virginia Portal Management
Serve as UVA's primary point of contact for the Transfer Virginia Portal.
Build and maintain strong working relationships with UVA colleagues and VCCS colleagues that strengthen UVA’s partnership with VCCS institutions.
Maintain and update portal content to meet the needs of prospective transfer students.
Review portal information on a regular basis to ensure accurate and transparent information is available through the portal.
3. Transfer Transition & Success
Serve as a central resource for newly admitted transfer students as they acclimate to UVA.
Partner with Orientation and Transition Programs (OTP), supporting initiatives and programs such as: Transfer Transition Coaches, New Student Orientation, Wahoo Welcome, and National Transfer Student Week
Plan and execute transfer achievement celebrations to honor students' transitions and milestones.
Ideal Candidate Qualifications
Experience advising community college or transfer students, especially in higher education or student affairs settings.
Familiarity with the Virginia Community College System (VCCS).
Understanding of barriers that transfer students face.
Strong organizational, communication, and public speaking skills.
Ability to explain complex academic pathways clearly.
Ability to collaborate across institutions and geographic locations.
Familiarity with Office, Student Information System, Slate, Common App, Canva, or other tools.
Minimum Qualifications
Education: Bachelor's degree or higher. Additional experience will be accepted in lieu of degree in some positions.
Experience: Three years experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience advising community college or transfer students, especially in higher education or student affairs settings.
Familiarity with the Virginia Community College System (VCCS).
Understanding of barriers that transfer students face.
Strong organizational, communication, and public speaking skills.
Ability to explain complex academic pathways clearly.
Ability to collaborate across institutions and geographic locations.
Familiarity with Office, Student Information System, Slate, Common App, Canva, or other tools.
Preferred Skills
Follow set admissions policies and procedures and adhere to regulatory guidelines in daily work. Strive to follow directions and work effectively as part of team to achieve shared goal; demonstrate thoughtful and appropriate oral and written communication in daily interactions, with an ability to advise prospective students, parents, and families about University admissions. Have knowledge of basic computer applications and possess basic knowledge of the University’s educational mission, strategic aims, and programs. Driver’s license required.
Physical Demands
This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs
Salary Range
The anticipated hiring range is $50,000 - $55,000 commensurate with education and experience.

This is a restricted position, which is dependent on funding and is contingent upon funding availability.
This position is based in Charlottesville, VA, and is eligible for a hybrid schedule which includes regular office hours at Piedmont Virginia Community College (PVCC), travel to other VCCS campuses and UVA as needed. Occasional evening and weekend hours required for special events.
