VACANCY ADVERTISEMENT: TRAINING SPECIALIST – OHSE

Reporting to the Coordinator – Apprenticeship and Graduates, the Training Specialist – OHSE will assess structured health, safety, and environmental learning for apprentices, ensuring they build role-ready competence and meet all OHSE compliance and certification requirements throughout the programme.

Your duties will include but are not limited to the following:

Deliver structured OHSE induction and ongoing HSE training tailored to apprentices’ tasks, risk exposure, and stage of learning.

Develop and maintain apprentice-safe learning materials (lesson plans, toolbox talks, SOP walk-throughs, practical demonstrations, assessments). 

Conduct competency assessments (practical evaluations, knowledge checks, observations) and confirm readiness before apprentices perform higher-risk tasks. 

Coach apprentices on hazard identification, risk assessment, and control measures (e.g., hierarchy of controls, permits, isolation/LOTO where applicable). 

Ensure apprentices understand and follow incident reporting, near-miss reporting, emergency response, and site rules (PPE, access control, safe work procedures).

Maintain accurate, audit-ready training and competency records (attendance, assessment evidence, certifications, refreshers, expiries). 

Partner with supervisors/mentors to plan safe workplace exposure, reinforcing correct behaviour through on-the-job coaching and follow-up. 

Identify training gaps or non-compliance trends and implement corrective actions (targeted refresher sessions, re-assessment, escalation where needed). 

Support continuous improvement by reviewing incidents, audit findings, and feedback to update training content and methods. 

Promote a strong safety culture by modelling safe behaviours, reinforcing standards consistently, and recognizing good practice among apprentices 

 Provide regular coaching, walkthroughs, and feedback to build confidence in hazard identification, risk assessments, and safe work planning. 

Coordinate supervised job shadowing, field inspections, toolbox talks, and participation in audits/permit processes to build real-world skills. 

Assess graduates through observations, quizzes, practical demonstrations, and portfolio evidence aligned to standards/certification. 

Develop graduates’ ability to influence safe behaviour, communicate risk clearly, and challenge unsafe acts respectfully. 

Hold periodic reviews with supervisors to track progress, address gaps early, and agree with targeted development actions. 

To be considered for the position, you must meet the following requirements:

Full Grade 12 School Certificate.

Minimum Diploma in Occupational Health & Safety and Environment.

Diploma in Teaching Methodology from a recognised learning institution. 

3 years’ experience in a similar role.

Experience in the mining industry will be an added advantage.

Strong communication and coaching skills.

Ability to work in a high-pressure, fast-paced production environment.
