Reporting to the Senior Specialist – Drill & Blast, the Training Specialist – Drill & Blast will be responsible for delivering high-quality training, competency assessments, and field coaching for all Drill & Blast (D&B) personnel, including drill rig operators, blast crew, stemming crew, explosive handlers, and charging teams. The role ensures compliance with operational standards, explosives regulations, OEM requirements, and safety procedures. This role directly supports safe blasting operations, productivity improvements, reduction of misfires, drilling accuracy, and overall compliance with the mine’s D&B standards.
Your duties will include but are not limited to the following:
Conduct training on blast hole drilling equipment (e.g., rotary drills, DTH drills, top hammer rigs).Deliver training for blast crew activities: charging, priming, wiring, stemming, tie-up methods, and blast set-up.Provide competency-based training for explosive and accessories handling in accordance with regulatory requirements.Facilitate induction, remedial, and refresher training for all D&B personnel.Coach operators on drill pattern interpretation, collaring techniques, drill quality, and equipment care.Conduct practical and theoretical assessments for drillers and blast crew.Maintain accurate competency profiles and training records.Recommend coaching for personnel with skill gaps or poor performance.Ensure assessment practices align with Internal Quality Assurance (IQA) and regulatory standards.Reinforce compliance with explosive legislation, shot firing standards, and mine safety procedures.Participate in investigations of incidents, misfires, or quality deviations (e.g., incorrect hole depths, poor tie-ups).Promote safe behaviors in blast zones, exclusion zones, magazine areas and during explosive transport.Support compliance with the mine’s Drill & Blast Management Plan.Monitor drilling quality (deviation, verticality, fragmentation impact, hole cleaning).Coach teams on achieving optimal penetration rates, bit selection, and machine setup.Work with engineers to ensure drill plans, load sheets, and blast instructions are correctly understood and executed.Support strategies to reduce re-drills, misfires, dilution, and poor fragmentation.Maintain complete and accurate training documentation, logbooks, assessment files, and attendance records.Produce weekly and monthly training reports highlighting progress and challenges.Assist in the development and review of SOPs, JHAs, training manuals, and visual aids.Update learning paths and competency scorecards for D&B rolesAnalyse operational data to identify training gaps or improvement opportunities.Recommend improvements to drilling practices, explosive handling, and blasting techniques.Introduce best-practice training models in alignment with OEM and industry standards.
To be considered for the position, you must meet the following requirements:
Full Grade 12 School Certificate
Certificate or Diploma in Training & Development or Instructional Techniques.
Assessor/Train-the-Trainer certification.
Valid Blasting License / Shotfirer Certification (strongly preferred).
Light Vehicle license (mandatory).
Drill OEM training certificates (advantage)
Experience operating drill rigs or working as part of a blast crew
At least 5 years of work experience with Minimum 2 years delivering operational training and Minimum 3 years working in Drill & Blast operations in open-pit or underground mining.
Experience with D&B safety systems, explosives inventory management, and blast planning processes
