Trainee Security Engineer / Security Engineer
The Role

Are you ready to use your technical curiosity to protect a global retail icon? At NEXT, we don’t just maintain security; we engineer it. We are looking for a threat-focused Security Engineer, or an ambitious Trainee with a strong IT foundation, to join our Information Security team.

This is more than a maintenance position. You will be a technical guardian, moving beyond system upkeep to build, automate, and evolve our defenses. You will be empowered to make an impact. At NEXT, we take ownership of our work and push the boundaries of automated security to help the business grow.

What You’ll Take OnProactive Defense: You will implement and fine-tune security technologies like SIEM, EDR, Identity Protection and WAF to stay ahead of an ever-shifting threat landscape.Engineering & Automation: You will improve efficiency by using Python-driven SOAR to automate alert enrichment and incident response.Cloud & On-Prem Mastery: You will secure complex environments across Azure and Google Cloud, ensuring our global infrastructure remains hardened.Collaborative Integration: You will act as a bridge, working closely with IT and Development teams to ensure new controls are integrated seamlessly.Vigilance: As a custodian of our brand, you will participate in a shift and call-out rota to provide expert technical support when it matters most.Risk-Driven Engineering: You will help evaluate new systems and vulnerabilities, working to understand the actual risk to the business rather than just applying a one size fits all technical fix. What You’ll BringThe Mindset: You are technically curious, pragmatic, and organised. You take pride in the reliability of your work and act with integrity to do the right thing. You are the type of person who sees a manual, repetitive IT task and immediately thinks about how to script it away. You value 'clean' systems and have a natural urge to harden any environment you touch.Technical Foundation: Proven experience in core IT, such as Windows Server, Linux, network administration, or application development.Engineers: Experience in the end-to-end lifecycle of security controls—from initial deployment and integration to continuous tuning and performance optimisation.Trainees: A 2:1 or higher in a Cyber Security focused degree. You will have a security-first approach and a portfolio of learning that proves your passion for the industry.Automation Skills: A desire to use Python for building security playbooks and integrations.Adaptability: You are a continuous learner who remains calm under pressure and can communicate complex risks clearly to everyone.Systems Thinking: You naturally look at how different technologies integrate. You enjoy the challenge of making disparate systems work together as a unified, automated defence layer.
