Duties Description Under the direction of the Park Manager or designee, the Trades Generalist will perform journey-level work in automotive maintenance and repair and perform skilled and semi-skilled work in plumbing, electrical, and masonry. This position will aid in the maintenance and repair of state park vehicles, equipment and other assigned trades tasks using the standard tools of the trade. This position may also require traveling to work in other parks within Ulster County. The job duties of this position include, but are not limited to:• Perform journey-level motor, small motor and heavy equipment repair, and will be required to weld as a secondary skill.• Performs preventative maintenance and repair on vehicles and equipment as well as engine and component repair of construction equipment.• Diagnose problems; read and interpret plans, diagrams, and specifications, must be able to work independently and understand and carry out written and oral instructions• Operates machinery such as skid steers, excavators, backhoes, and loaders. Completes daily maintenance procedures for equipment.• Maintains adequate levels of supplies, tools, and equipment to accomplish tasks; makes necessary purchases following all Agency guidelines.• Assists with maintenance of roads, paths, and trails.• Requires use of hand tools, portable power tools, shop equipment, and measuring and testing instruments appropriate to the assigned trade.• Will be responsible for overall coordination and execution of projects, working independently with minimal direct supervision.• Assigns, supervises, reviews, trains, and evaluates work of lower-level employees.• This position involves medium to heavy physical labor and working outside in all weather conditions.• Assists in snow and ice control and operates snow removal equipment.• Assists with tree removal/pruning operations that require the operation of chippers, stump grinders, and lift equipment as needed. • Assists in other areas of park operations as directed.• Communicates effectively with other staff and park patrons in a responsible and courteous manner. • Adheres to the agency’s Code of Conduct Policy and ensure compliance with all guidelines, policies, and procedures in the performance of daily tasks.
Minimum Qualifications Four years of full-time experience* in a trade under a skilled tradesperson which would provide training equivalent to that given in a training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program; or an equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of technical courses in skilled trades at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services.When required to operate motor vehicles, candidates must possess a valid driver's license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated.*If verifiable, we will accept and prorate part-time and volunteer experience.
Additional Comments OPERATING NEEDS:• Must have the ability to operate a chainsaw and must complete Game of Logging levels 1, 2, and 3 and chainsaw 101 or equivalent training within the probationary period and maintain it as a term and condition of employment. This training will be provided by OPRHP. • Must possess or obtain a valid Class B** CDL license that allows the candidate to legally operate commercial vehicles in New York State within the probationary period and maintain it as a term and condition of employment.• Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license that allows the candidate to legally operate a vehicle in New York State as a term and condition of employment.• Must be qualified and medically cleared to wear a respirator and adhere to safe working practices.• Must be available to work weekends, holidays, as well as some evenings and overtime as needed.• Must be able to weld aluminum, stainless steel, and other metals.**Under the provisions of the Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act (1991), this position has been designated Safety Sensitive.
