New Porgera Limited (NPL) is a company incorporated in Papua New Guinea and owns the Porgera Gold Mine in Enga Province. The Porgera Gold Mine will employ nearly 3,000 Papua New Guineans at full production, and over the last 30 years of life of the mine it has contributed approximately 10% of Papua New Guinea’s total annual exports. 

The New Porgera Limited now has a vacancy for a qualified and experienced individual as Trades Assistant – Mine Communications Underground.

About the role

Reporting to the Advisor - Technical - Mine Communications, the Trades Assistant will play a key role in supporting the daily operations of the mine communications team. This involves assisting in the maintenance, repair, and installation of underground communication systems, ensuring that all communication equipment is fully functional and reliable for safe and efficient mine operations. You will work closely with the trades team to minimize downtime and maintain a safe and effective underground communication network.

In this role, you will:

Assist in the maintenance, repair, and installation of mine communications systems, including underground radio systems, intercoms, and other communication devices

Provide support to the trades team by preparing tools, parts, and equipment for use

Provide support by operating equipment such integrated tool carriers

Assist with the cleaning and maintenance of communication equipment and systems

Maintain accurate records of maintenance work completed, parts used, and system downtime

Ensure all tasks comply with NPL’s safety, health, and environmental policies and procedures

Help organize and manage parts inventory to ensure availability for ongoing maintenance work

Assist with troubleshooting and diagnosing issues with communication systems and equipment

Follow instructions from the trades team and supervisors to ensure tasks are completed safely and efficiently

Uphold high standards of health and safety awareness, ensuring compliance with NPL’s Occupational Health & Safety Policy and all safety procedures.

About You

To succeed in this role, the ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications and experiences:

Minimum of Grade 12 or equivalent education

Ability to read and write in English at an Upper Secondary School Standard

Completion of the Job Ready Program or relevant Trade Training Programs

Good verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team

Ability to work independently and with minimal supervision

Willingness to adhere to safety regulations and protocols.

Ability to work effectively as part of a team and follow instructions from supervisors and tradespeople

Physically fit and able to work in an underground environment and varying weather conditions

Fluency in English and/or Tok Pisin is an advantage.

PNG drivers license.

Previous experience in operating integrated tool carries will be an advantage. 

Mobilization Requirement 

This is a PNG National Award position, a site-based role on a Walk in Walk out arrangement with rotation of 14 days on and 7 days off. Must successfully pass a pre-employment medical including drug and alcohol screening. (This will be arranged only for successful candidates who progress after the interview stage) and have an up-to-date Police Clearance Certificate (acquired within the last 6 months). Must a Local Porgeran (Cat 1A – SML, Cat 1B –LMP or Cat 2 – Other Porgera) candidate and available to start immediately.
