Texas and its government have an outsized impact on national politics. The personalities both in the Austin statehouse and in the broader culture show the evolution of the modern conservative movement. The New York Times is looking for an experienced correspondent to produce scoops and revelatory analysis about Texas politics. 

You are deeply sourced in Texas and can drive the conversation about the region’s politics for a national audience. You will come brimming with ideas for engaging stories in a variety of formats that help to explain and visualize the beat for our readers – whether they are in Texas, across the country or around the world. You have a clear record of scoops and an ability to write with authority. You should embrace a true range of stories and turnaround times, seeing news moments as opportunities to show off your expertise through clear and vivid writing. You are collaborative with colleagues.

This is an in-office position, based in Texas and includes regular attendance in the office four days each week. There may be some flexibility to work remotely per your departmental guidance. This position is represented by the NewsGuild of NY.

Responsibilities:

You will cultivate a deep bench of sources that drive scoops and power news coverage

You will write with authority, clarity, independently and on deadline

You will translate Texas politics for a national audience 

You will monitor news and delivering a steady stream of story ideas that help explain the region

You will produce exclusive stories that demonstrate beat authority

You will collaborate with colleagues across the newsroom who are based in Texas

Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world

You will report to the Texas Editor on the National Desk.

Basic Qualifications:

10+ years’ experience at a journalism or media company or other relevant organization

Writing skills that demonstrate mastery of journalistic style and standards, including ethical and superb news judgment

A portfolio that includes politics, news, enterprise and analysis

Experience covering news in Texas

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience with new story-telling approaches
