Job Overview:

The Telemetry Technician oversees and interprets the cardiac monitor for arrhythmias and changes in heart rhythm.

The Telemetry Unit is a 38-bed, team-oriented unit that provides a wide variety of Medical/Surgical and diagnostic services to a diverse cardiac population i.e. congestive heart failure, coronary artery disease, respiratory compromise and dysrhythmias.

Qualifications:

Required:

HS Diploma or equivalent

Completion of accredited program in medical assisting or related technical education course or successful completion of the TRMC monitor technician course

Must have the ability to examine heartbeat patterns, noting heartbeat irregularities in real time and ensuring the heart monitors are functioning correctly

Preferred:

At least one year of telemetry/monitoring work experience

Scheduling Requirements:

Shift working, 8:00 4:30pm each dayFT

Essential Functions:

Promotes and implements the concept of patient and family-centered care. Promotes a compassionate and supportive environmentObserves and reports to the Registered Nurse patient s response to intervention/treatments. Knows how to activate code system. Gives report on cardiac rhythm to physicians and RN as request. Gives report to oncoming telemetry technician or relief RN. Reports to RN all rhythm changes; also physicians if available. Consults with RN when in doubt of rhythm.Communicates and records pertinent information to appropriate individuals. Record vital signs and bedside glucose testing results. Documents accurately and legibly on appropriate records. Collects specimens; labels accurately and ensures delivery to appropriate departmentPrepares patient for monitoring using proper techniques in electrode placement. Removes and discontinues telemetry transmitter from patients being discharged or transferredCleans and disinfects equipment following procedures as assigned. Orders all supplies needed from the storeroom and central supply. Stocks all supplies in appropriate locations and reports all shortages to the charge nurseMay work in areas where medications are stored. This includes checking for expiration dates for kits, trays with meds, IV fluids, needles, etc. rotating and stocking other supplies. Occasionally, transporting the tray/kit for the nurse or physician to provide patient careMaintains inventory of telemetry transmitters each shift. Run, interpret, and post EKG strips within 3 hours of start of shift. Maintain integrity of telemetry packs (wires, batteries, covers)Provides and maintains a safe environment and performs proper surveillance for the prevention of falls for patients at risk. Identifies equipment problems and contacts appropriate departments for repair/replacementAttends meetings and departmental programs as requested. Participates in inter and intra departmental activities. Participates in inter and intra Departmental activitiesMaintains adequate coverage of monitors at all times. Maintains alarms on at all times. Completes all monitoring activities by the end of the shift. Completes documentation on telemetry mount sheets each shift. Makes rounds to verify patient status every two hours and PRNGreets and assists physicians, hospital staff, patients and visitors with questions. Answers phone in a courteous mannerPerform other duties as directed
