Description
Lee County is hiring a Technician I, Traffic Signs, for our Transportation team.
In this job, you will help keep our roads safe by installing, maintaining, and repairing traffic control signs and related equipment. You’ll work mostly in the field, traveling to different locations to make sure signs are visible, properly placed, and meet federal safety standards.
This job is a great fit for someone who enjoys hands-on outdoor work, working independently, and supporting public safety in the community.
Duties and Responsibilities
What You Will Do
+ Install, remove, replace, relocate, and repair traffic control signs, barricades, and related devices following MUTCD, FHWA, and departmental standards.
+ Travel to field locations to inspect and maintain traffic signs, ensuring proper placement, visibility, and compliance with federal regulations.
+ Perform preventative maintenance such as trimming trees and brush, cleaning signs, and removing obstructions that block visibility.
+ Repair or restore damaged, vandalized, or weathered signs to meet federal requirements.
+ Install detour barricades and directional markers according to approved detour plans.
+ Complete electronic work orders in the signs database, documenting locations, measurements, work performed, and repair dates.
+ Perform routine cleaning and maintenance of vehicles and equipment.
+ Assist with traffic sign fabrication as needed.
+ Follow all safety rules and procedures while working in and around traffic.
+ Perform other related duties as assigned.
Education, Experience, Licensing
What We’re Looking For
+ High School Diploma or GED, or similar education and experience .
+ One year of experience in general maintenance or repair work, including use of hand and power tools.
+ Preferred: Experience installing or repairing traffic control signs.
Required Certifications
(Must have or be able to obtain within one year of hire)
+ Traffic Safety in the Work Zone Area
+ International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) certification
+ Association Level I Signs and Markings certification
Licensing Requirements
+ Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
Extra Skills
+ Knowledge of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).
+ Ability to read and understand federal manuals, engineering drawings, and traffic control plans.
+ Comfortable making independent decisions based on instructions and site conditions.
+ Skilled in using tools and equipment related to sign installation and maintenance.
+ Awareness of job-related safety hazards and proper precautions.
+ Basic computer skills, including data entry and familiarity with GIS systems.
+ Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and complete accurate documentation.

Work Schedule: Monday–Thursday, 7:00 AM – 5:30 PM
