VACANCY ADVERTISEMENT: TECHNICAL TRAINING & DEVELOPMENT MANAGER

Reporting to the Operations Manager, the Technical Training and & Development Manager will Lead all workforce capability, training, and development initiatives across the mining operation. This includes oversight of Technical Training, the Graduate Development Program and the Apprenticeship Program to build a skilled, competent, and safety-focused workforce. The role partners with operational leaders, engineering, maintenance, safety, and HR teams to ensure training meets operational needs, legislative requirements, and future talent pipeline demands.

 

Your duties will include but are not limited to the following:

Develop and implement the site-wide L&D strategy that aligns with business goals and operational requirements.

Lead and mentor the L&D team, including trainers, assessors, coordinators, graduates, apprentices, and technical trainers.

Conduct workforce capability assessments and training needs analyses to identify current and future skill gaps.

 Support succession planning and workforce development strategies through targeted learning pathways.

Oversee the development and delivery of technical and operational training programs across mining, processing, maintenance, engineering, and support functions.

Ensure technical training materials are accurate, up-to-date, and aligned with OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) standards and site procedures.

Manage technical trainers, assessors, and external training providers to ensure high-quality training delivery

Implement and maintain competency-based technical training frameworks, including task observations, assessments, and skill verifications.

Facilitate advanced technical training initiatives such as equipment simulation and trade upskilling.

Design, manage, and continuously improve the Graduate Development Program across disciplines such as mining engineering, geology, metallurgy, processing, environmental, and business support.

Structure rotation schedules, mentoring programs, development workshops, and competency milestones.

Support graduates in achieving professional accreditation

Monitor graduate progress, conduct reviews, and provide coaching and development plans.

Lead the Apprenticeship Program for Disciplines

Collaborate with TEVETA to ensure curriculum quality, compliance, and assessment integrity.

Manage apprentice recruitment, onboarding, rotations, mentoring, and trade qualification progression.

Ensure apprentices receive appropriate safety, technical, and practical training to become fully qualified tradespeople.

Oversee induction and onboarding programs for all employees and contractors.

Manage mandatory, refresher, and safety-critical training across the site.

Ensure all training aligns with statutory and regulatory requirements.

Develop competency matrices and learning pathways for operational roles.

Implement blended learning approaches, including classroom, field-based, e-learning, simulation, and coaching

Lead audit preparation and follow-up actions for internal and external regulatory audits.

Manage the Learning Management System (DAMSTRA) and digital learning platforms.

Introduce innovative training solutions such as virtual reality, simulation, and digital competency assessments.

Ensure accurate reporting and data management through the Learning Management Systems (LMS).

Collaborate with operational teams, supervisors, and technical experts to ensure training meets real-world operational needsContinuously evaluate training effectiveness and implement process or content improvements.

To be considered for the position, you must meet the following requirements:

Full Grade 12 School Certificate

Bachelor’s degree in education, Training & Development, Engineering, or a related field.

Post qualifications diploma or certification in Training & Development or Teaching Methodology.

Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (or equivalent) highly desirable.Additional qualifications in technical training, vocational education, or organisational development are advantageous.10 years in L&D, technical training, or workforce development in mining or heavy industry. Proven experience managing Graduate and/or Apprenticeship programs.Strong background in technical training delivery, coordination, or curriculum development.Experience in leading training teams in a high-risk operational environment.Solid understanding of Mining operations, equipment, processes, and related technical competencies.

Knowledge of regulatory requirements and competency frameworks used in mining.

Proficiency with LMS platforms and digital learning technologies.
