Brush Power Generation is searching for an experienced Technical Support Engineer to work alongside our Engineering and Service staff to oversee the inspection, testing, troubleshooting, and commissioning of BRUSH Voltage Regulation Systems (AVRs) in power generation, industrial, or marine applications.

The Technical Support Engineer will be responsible for all aspects of contract set up, maintenance & troubleshooting, system calibration, technical support & documentation including warranty investigations. There will also be a need to support the commercial division to support detailed technical AVR fit and solution discussions when required.

In this role you will be responsible for:

AVR set up, Field Engineering & Commissioning: Perform contract specific software set up commissioning, and testing of AVR systems prior to despatch.

Maintenance & Troubleshooting: Support routine and forced outage maintenance, conducting inspections to detect wear, corrosion, and loose connections. Diagnose complex electrical issues using tools like multimeters and oscilloscopes. Conduct inspections to identify component degradation (e.g., burnt components, corrosion, loose or damaged wiring).

Implement preventive maintenance to reduce downtime and increase system reliability.

System Calibration: Calibrate AVRs to align with desired voltage levels and ensure proper functioning.

Technical Support & Documentation: Provide technical expertise to clients and internal teams, including producing reports on testing, maintenance, and fault analysis.

Safety Compliance: Ensure all work adheres to safety protocols, including handling high-voltage equipment and working in confined spaces.

Project Management: Manage, plan, and execute projects from concept through to commissioning, including providing technical liaison with suppliers and warranty claims.

To be successful in this role you will have:

Proven experience in a customer/supplier facing role.Degree or experience in Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, or a similar field.Demonstrable experience in generator excitation systems or power‑generation equipment, knowledge of generator controls, excitation systems, and AVR maintenance.Familiarity with generator OEMs (e.g., BRUSH, GE, Basler, DEIF, Woodward) is a strong advantage.Ability to lift heavy objects (up to 40 lbs) and do other labour-intensive tasks.Excellent time management and multitasking skills.Excitation System Knowledge : Have a deep understanding of electrical principles, including 3-phase systems, power electronics (SCRs), and control loops. Understanding of Self‑Excited (Shunt), Auxiliary Winding, and Permanent Magnet Generator (PMG) excitation systems.AVR Technologies: Proficiency with both Analog AVRs (simple, robust) and Digital AVRs (microprocessor‑based, high‑accuracy, with communication interfaces).Protection Systems: Ability to set up and manage protection features including under‑frequency, over‑voltage, and under‑voltage protection.Knowledge of generator build‑up characteristics and field flashing requirements.Component-Level Expertise: Familiarity with electronic components such as: Thyristors (SCRs), Diodes, Potential transformers (PTs), Potentiometers, Capacitors and sensing circuits.Diagnostic & Test Tools: Competent use of oscilloscopes, multimeters, insulation testers, waveform analyzers, and OEM configuration software.Strong communication skills for customer interaction, ability to work solo or in small teams, and flexibility for travel.Problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
