**Job Description**
The **Technical Practice Lead – Hydraulics** will lead the modelling practice in Canada and provide technical and strategic support for U.S. operations. This role will oversee the development and application of advanced hydraulic and hydrologic models to support system capacity assessments, inflow/infiltration (I/I) reduction planning, wet weather management, and regulatory compliance for municipal and utility clients. The Director will act as the senior technical authority for modelling, mentor and grow teams, and ensure modelling approaches align with Canadian regulatory frameworks, client needs, and emerging digital technologies. The **Technical Practice Lead – Hydraulics** will lead Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) Modelling and provide hydraulic design advisory for complex hydraulic structures, including pumpstation intakes and water and wastewater systems
**Key Responsibilities**
**Strategic Leadership**
+ Lead hydraulic modelling and design strategy for Canada while supporting U.S. projects and clients.
+ Establish and maintain standards, QA/QC processes, and best practices across project
+ Act as a trusted advisor to Canadian municipalities/utilities and U.S. clients on wastewater system performance, resiliency, and compliance.
**Technical Oversight**
+ Direct the development, calibration, and application of hydraulic models using **Bentley WaterGEMS, Bentley HAMMER,** **InfoWorks ICM,InfowWater, PCSWMM, SewerGEMS, MIKE URBAN, or similar tools** .
+ Conduct CFD analysis for hydraulic structures such as pump station intake, water treatment reservoirs, wastewater treatment mixing chambers, water /wastewater treatment headworks using ANSYS CFX/Fluent, STARCCM+. Conduct analyses to support **capacity planning, I/I reduction, combined sewer overflow (CSO) and sanitary sewer overflow (SSO) mitigation, and long-term control planning** .
+ Provide design advisory for water/wastewater pump stations including pump station suction discharge piping, intake design based on HI standard
+ Provide advisory for the CFD and physical modelling of pump stations and hydropower intakes
+ Provide hydraulic assessment for outfall diffuser structures, large tunnel intakes
+ Conduct hydraulic analysis and provide HGL profile for water and wastewater treatment plants.
+ Provide transient analysis for pump stations and pipelines/forcemains and design surge protection system
+ Conducted transient analysis of complex city-wide water distribution networks, calibrate models with high-speed pressure sensor data, and provided technical advisory on surge mitigation strategies, including device sizing and operational improvements, to enhance system resilience and reduce risk of infrastructure damage.
+ Integrate hydraulic models with **GIS, SCADA, and real-time data** for both planning and operational decision-making.
+ Support compliance with Canadian municipal/provincial requirements and U.S. regulatory frameworks (e.g., **EPA wet weather programs, consent decrees** ).
**Team & Practice Development**
+ Build, lead, and mentor a national team of modellers in Canada, with collaborative ties to U.S. counterparts.
+ Create training and professional development opportunities to grow modelling capacity across the organization.
+ Promote knowledge sharing and innovation across Canada
**Client Engagement & Business Development**
+ Partner with business development and operations leaders to pursue and deliver wastewater modelling projects in Canada
+ Build strong relationships with municipal utilities, regulators, and industry partners.
+ Represent the company at technical conferences and professional organizations across North America.
**Innovation & Digital Transformation**
+ Champion adoption of **advanced modelling techniques, digital twins, and real-time decision support systems** for water/wastewater utilities.
+ Lead initiatives to incorporate **AI/ML, cloud computing, and predictive analytics** into modelling workflows.
+ Drive alignment of modelling practices with the company’s broader **digital strategy** for smart infrastructure management.
**Qualifications**
**Qualifications**
+ Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Civil, Environmental, or Water Resources Engineering
+ Minimum 8+ years related industry and engineering design experience in **hydraulic modelling**
+ Registered as a P.Eng. in the province of ON or able to obtain within 6 months
**Preferred Qualifications**
+ 15+ years of progressive experience in **hydraulic modelling** with leadership responsibilities.
+ Expertise with major wastewater modelling platforms ( **Bentley WaterGEMS, Bentley HAMMER InfoWorks ICM, PCSWMM, MIKE URBAN, ANSYS CFX/Fluent, STARCCM+, SewerGEMS, or equivalent** ).
+ In-depth understanding of Canadian municipal wastewater regulations, policies, and planning practices, as well as U.S. EPA wet weather compliance requirements.
+ Demonstrated success in **team leadership, mentoring**
+ Proven ability to support **business development** and client engagement in Canada
+ Strong communication, technical writing, and presentation skills with diverse audiences.
