SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION:
Under the guidance of the director of the Department of Planning and Construction, provides leadership, coordination, and support for a variety of special projects in the areas of HVAC, roofing, relocatable classrooms, playgrounds and site amenities, elevators and lifts, program interior modifications, improved safe access, and other smaller capital improvements and systemic improvements for Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) facilities. Oversees the development of architectural and engineering plans, specifications and cost estimates prepared by consulting engineers and architects for limited renovation and systemic projects, ensuring compliance with applicable building codes and standards. Serves as a local leader to inspire, represent design excellence, and reinforce core values of the division and overall school district. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Ability to climb ladders and inspect roofs. as required by the duties and responsibilities of the job.SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) Availability to attend meetings and site visits outside of regular working hours as needed.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Thorough knowledge of architectural principles and practices and their application to public sector construction, specifically K-12 education. Thorough knowledge of applicable building codes and standards, ordinances, and regulations. Strong understanding of sustainable design, the market, industry trends, and industry leaders. Demonstrated technical skills on capital projects, alterations, and systemic improvement projects. Exceptional leadership, communication, and team-building skills. Ability to prioritize ongoing and multiple projects, to address multiple tasks, technical issues, and contingencies at the same time, to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school administrators, central office staff, consultants, and contractors. Is able to gain an understanding of and apply the six leadership standards that have been established for the Montgomery County Association of Administrators and Principals (MCAAP/MCBOA) Professional Growth System (PGS).
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor's degree from an accredited university with a preferred major in architecture, mechanical, electrical, or civil engineering, or construction management. Master?s degree highly desirable. Preference for possession and maintenance of a Professional Architect or Engineers License is strongly desirable. Experience in architectural or engineering planning, demonstrated leadership skills, and ability to work with a variety of stakeholders. Familiarity with permitting requirements and applicable local, state, and international commercial building codes. Familiarity with sustainable design. Organizational skills, meticulous attention to detail, database management, and budget development. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience that provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a non-commercial driver?s license.
