Department OverviewMotorola's Access Control Division's (previously OpenPath, now Avigilon Alta) mission is to improve your workday with smart office technology at your front door. We are looking for candidates who can help us build, scale and innovate as we develop our industry leading platform for access control and office automation. Strong analytical and software skills are a must in order to join our team, and we are particularly seeking candidates with experience and skills in multiple technologies, in order to contribute broadly to our team-centric approach to product development.

The Avigilon Alta hardware product group seeks a Firmware Engineering Team Lead to drive the design, development, and deployment of embedded firmware on new and existing products. This role requires strong technical and leadership skills to build, scale, and innovatively develop our industry-leading platform for access control and office automation. Strong analytical and software skills are essential, with a particular focus on experience in power-constrained, real-time environments.
Job Description

Our Firmware Engineering team is looking for an exceptional Team Lead with a passion for innovation, technology, and quality. The team builds and maintains the firmware that powers our ever-expanding lineup of physical security devices, including card/NFC and mobile/BLE readers, video devices, and I/O expansion boards, all of which must seamlessly support the business and its growing customer base. This position requires significant cross-team communication and cooperation with customer support, QA, product management, and software and hardware development groups. The ideal candidate will be passionate about pragmatic problem-solving and automation for improving both product quality as well as the developer experience.

What you'll be doing:

Lead a team of 5+ individuals providing on-going employee coaching, mentoring, development, and team buildingDesigning and developing highly reliable software for our internally-designed embedded systems as well as hardware interface services in an embedded environmentSetting team priorities that align with organizational goals and objectivesMaking data-driven decisions to optimize for power consumption and performanceBoard bring up, writing device drivers, and R&D on the latest embedded technologiesWriting clean and testable C code for a multi-processor productIterating on existing RF software drivers and business logic to improve performance and reliabilityReading schematics and collaborating with hardware engineersWork closely with hardware development for all NPI activities, including initial bring up, test, certification, and manufacturingTaking ownership of your code, including verification testing and writing documentationWork with customer support and other software teams to diagnose and resolve customer issues as neededWork with QA team to design, develop and execute test scripts for life cycle, unit and regression testingWork cross-functionally with other engineering and product leadership across mobile app, cloud software, and hardware teams to guide the development of new products and the evolution of the organization’s team structures and development processesLeading embedded architecture and processor decisions to optimize for performance and reliability of our products

Requirements:

2+ years of experience managing or leading an engineering teamExcellent programming skills in an embedded context, using C or C++Experience developing with BLE, NFC, and/or other wireless technologiesExperience leading Agile teamsExperience working on Nordic, ATTiny, or SAMD microcontrollersExperience with both bare-metal and RTOS based firmware developmentStrong background working on firmware at scale, servicing updates through OTAResults-oriented, dependable, and accountableStrong ability to analyze existing code and debugComfortable reading Python, Makefile, and Shell scriptsBachelor's DegreeExperience with AI/machine learning technologies is strongly preferred

Target Base Salary Range: $150,000 - $210,000

Consistent with Motorola Solutions values and applicable law, we provide the following information to promote pay transparency and equity. Pay within this range varies and depends on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The actual offer will be based on the individual candidate.
