Job Description

Position Purpose: 

Perform maintenance, repair, replacement and inspection of all Veolia Water Delaware distribution fire hydrants, valves, pipe, services, and appurtenances. The Utility Worker will excavate, repair, replace, and maintain all aspects of Veolia’s distribution system while keeping accurate records of all work done and communicating with all employees and departments.

Primary Duties/Responsibilities: 

Locate, access, operate, and repair Company facilities such as mains, hydrants, blow-offs, services, curb stops, distribution valves, shutoff valves, and plumbing fixtures.Investigate and diagnose hydraulic variations that may adversely impact system operations and customer service, and initiate corrective action.Operates equipment, drives utility to perform necessary job functions.Digs trenches to remove defective pipes and install new, loads and unloads pipes and fittings, pours concrete and caulks pipes as necessary.Perform distribution system tests, including but not limited to, fire flows, customer service lines, and pressure losses.Locate Company underground facilities and initiate requests to mark-out other utilities' facilities.Raise to grade Company facilities such as curb and valve boxesComplete the installation of facilities, including but not limited to, water services, main extensions, fire hydrants, valves, and any other T&D Crew workCollect and evaluate water samples, as directed, in accordance with established water quality practices.Transport materials to and from facilities and/or job sites.Prepare Company facilities for adverse weather conditions.Restore service to frozen Company facilities, as required.Record pertinent data and maintain accurate records in the electronic work order system and field tablets.Report conditions in the field that may adversely impact Customer Service or public safety, as well as conditions that may result in damage to Company facilities.Respond to inquiries accurately and professionally and, when necessary, involve the appropriate individuals to resolve customer and Company-related issues to achieve the highest level of Customer Service in all areas of responsibility.Adhere to all Company policies and practices at all times.Available for Emergency coverage outside of normal working hours.  Some night and weekend emergency work is required.Other duties as required or assigned.

Qualifications

Education/Experience/Background: 

High School Diploma/GED is required.1 to 3 years minimum experience as a plumber/utility/construction worker installing water main and/or appurtenances up to 24” diameter (to include fire/domestic water services, fire hydrants, repair clamps, etc.) 

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: 

Attain a working knowledge of the Transmission and Distribution system within 6 months of hireExcellent customer service skills.Ability to communicate effectively with the public and fellow employees.Perform job responsibilities with minimal supervision in a timely mannerGood physical condition to be able to meet the physical requirements necessary to hand excavate and perform the various lifting, bending, and carrying itemsKnowledge of OSHA and safety policies.Ability to read, troubleshoot and perform work from schematics or drawingsRegularly climb in and out of trenches.Routinely bend, crouch, kneel, work in confined spaces, and work over one's head.Operate/maintain air compressor and other tools used as part of job.Operate a forklift to load/unload equipmentOccasionally lift and carry objects weighing as much as 75 pounds unassisted.Routinely walk on uneven ground and slopes.Work indoors and outdoors in all types of weather and temperatures.Ability to learn new water industry technology and use it properly.

Required Certification/Licenses/Training: 

Basic plumbing or mechanical training/courses would be beneficial, but not requiredCurrent Delaware Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) preferred but not required.  If not, must obtain per the collective bargaining agreement once hired.
