System Operator II (Weather Operator)

This Opportunity
WSP is currently initiating a search for a System Operator II (Weather Operator) for our Long Island City, NY office. Be involved in projects with our Mobility Operations Team and be a part of a growing organization that meets our client’s objectives and solves their challenges. This position will have a focus on providing weather related updates, being a liaison between the JTMC and the Special Incident Coordinator, as well as City and State Offices of Emergency Management, and may be required to act as a fill in or backup to the Special Incident Coordinator, when required. This position may split time between the JTMC control room and the Satellite Office facility.
Your Impact
+ Review and analyze weather data from various sources, including the national weather service, national oceanic and atmospheric administration, NYS Office of Emergency Management, AccuWeather, Weather Underground, and various other sources.
+ Prepare and distribute daily weather forecast reports, including long-range outlooks for up to 14 days.
+ Generate compact weather updates that include information about tropical weather systems, potential for coastal or roadway/urban flooding, RWIS roadway information, fog potential, and official NWS watches and warnings.
+ Include percentage probability of precipitation and estimated ranges of likely or possible amounts in forecast reports.
+ Provide additional forecasts and updates during severe weather threats, as requested.
+ Assist the Special Incident Coordinator during major weather events, including acting as a liaison between the JTMC and City and/or state Offices of Emergency Management.
+ Provide training and guidance on weather related operations to shift managers and lead operators.
+ Providing backup capability to the Special Incident Coordinator when needed.
+ Perform as the Acting Lead when the lead operator is not available
+ Serve as the main contact person for a particular system during the shift
+ Assist with on-the-job training for new operators
+ Operate various computer-based traffic & freeway management systems to manage incidents on roadways and improve traffic conditions
+ Monitor roadways via CCTV surveillance cameras and detection systems
+ Monitor all Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) devices and computer equipment associated with the system
+ Display expertise with the operation of all ITS equipment, computers and software associated with a particular system
+ Utilize ITS equipment for incident management and the improvement of travel time, safety, and quality of life
+ Check the accuracy and validity of the messages displayed on all variable message signs (VMS)Enter incident information into computer using Traffic Management System (TMS) software. Familiarity with the roadways and understanding the purpose and location of each VMS and CCTV device
+ Use standard operating procedures to detect, dispatch, monitor and document roadway incidentsConfer with operations center partners as well as adjacent NYSDOT Transportation Management Centers (TMCs) to coordinate resources for incidents that may affect regional travel
+ Provide good communication, writing, and computer skills
+ Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct and adhere to WSP's Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures
+ Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP's health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies
Who You Are
**Required Qualifications**
+ High School diploma
+ Currently or recently employed in a NYSDOT TMC as a System Operator I or System Operator II or higher
+ Minimum 3 years of experience within a TMC type facility and/or traffic management center
+ Oral and written communication
+ Computer/Software – including MS Office applications, spreadsheets and databases
+ Public, internal and external relations (works well with internal, external and partner groups and individuals)
+ Analytical and organizational skills
**Preferred requirements**
+ Must hold current certifications in FEMA IS-100 (ICS), FEMA IS-700 (Introduction to the National Incident Management System) or be able to obtain them within 2 months of hire.

Expected Salary: $41,800 - $64,800
WSP USA is providing the compensation range that the company in good faith believes it might pay and/or offer for this position within the state of Colorado, based on the successful applicant’s education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities in addition to internal equity and specific geographic location. WSP USA reserves the right to ultimately pay more or less than the posted range and offer additional benefits and other compensation, depending on circumstances not related to an applicant’s sex or other status protected by local, state, and/or federal law.
