We are seeking a System Design Engineer to join our Randburg office. We are looking for comprehensive, hands‑on experience with Rockwell Automation technologies and ability to develop innovative solutions to complex engineering problems.
You will translate customer requirements into robust system architectures, ensure seamless integration of hardware and software, and support the full lifecycle of engineered solutions.
You will be located in Randburg, Johannesburg. Business Unit: Rockwell Automation Sub‑Saharan Africa.
You will be reporting to Engineering manager.
Responsibilities - you will do:
Analyse customer requirements to determine optimal control system architecture, hardware selection, and software configuration.Develop conceptual and detailed hardware designs that comply with industry standards, safety requirements, and best engineering practices.Define control strategies and system specifications, ensuring alignment with functional, safety, and performance requirements.Oversee integration of Rockwell Automation and third‑party hardware, instrumentation, and control systems.Prepare high‑quality technical documentation, including functional specifications, design reports, and test procedures.Conduct design reviews, factory acceptance tests (FAT), and site acceptance tests (SAT) with internal teams and customers.Perform on‑site commissioning, start‑up support, and troubleshooting as required.Engage with panel builders, suppliers, and system partners to review progress, provide technical guidance, and ensure compliance with design intent.Identify, analyse, and resolve system design or performance issues, recommending corrective actions where necessary.Apply innovative thinking to improve system performance, reduce complexity, and enhance customer value.Essential Requirements - you will have:
Bachelor's Degree or Diploma (NQF 6 or 7) in:Electrical EngineeringElectronic EngineeringComputer EngineeringMechatronics EngineeringComprehensive, hands‑on experience with Rockwell Automation technologies is essential, including Logix controllers, Studio 5000, FactoryTalk software, and associated hardware platforms.Minimum 5 years' experience in control system design, implementation, and commissioning.Experience managing multiple complex engineering projects simultaneously.Experience with industrial control systems, including PLCs, HMIs, SCADA, and communication networks.Familiarity with other industrial control equipment and protocols.Valid South African driver's licence and willingness to travel regularly.Legal right to work in South Africa.You might also have:
Experience with Medium Voltage (MV) switchgear and protection systems.Experience with Low Voltage (LV) variable speed drives and motor control solutions.Knowledge of industrial control system packaging, including mechanical robustness, EMC compliance, and thermal design considerations.Experience developing and executing hardware and system test specifications.Proven ability to diagnose and resolve complex issues involving both hardware and firmware.What We Offer:
