As a Surgical Technologist Educator, you will provide clinical education for surgical technologist caregivers and students within perioperative patient care areas, including orientation for new hires and transfers. In this role, you will promote caregiver growth and development through in-services, instruction, and other teaching methodologies. You will set standards and expectations through your conduct, work ethic, integrity, and character. While collaborating with the perioperative education team and leadership on educational initiatives, you will serve as a resource for caregivers by providing evidence-based information and research to support innovation in perioperative systems and assist Perioperative Educators with the clinical education of registered nurses.

A caregiver in this role works days from 6:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. and occasional weekend training requirements.

A caregiver who excels in this role will:

Lead and manage enterprise-wide surgical technology programs, including new hire orientation, competency assessments, the Surgical Technologist internship, ST needs assessment, and student project oversight.

Function as liaison and as administrative, technical or operational resource for academic partners. 

Update, monitor and manage databases

Act as liaison with committees, employees and academic partners

Assist with scheduling, coordination, preparation and communication of student initiatives and clinical rotations

Support adherence to accreditation standards, regulatory requirements, and organizational policies.

Design, direct, implement, and evaluate educational offerings based on the knowledge, skills, and learning levels of caregivers.

Collaborate with nursing management plans and implement orientation for new hires.

Identify learning needs and goals of caregivers.

May assist in the interview process for new caregivers.

Develop and utilize appropriate evaluations to determine the effectiveness of educational activities.

Assist in the development of department-specific orientation and competencies.

Coordinate continuing education, training programs, and caregivers’ development.

Consult with individuals within the Nursing Institute, Surgical Operations, Infection Prevention, Cleveland Clinic, and the community regarding professional practices and caregiver roles.

Lead enterprise initiatives related to process improvement and problem resolution.

Collaborate with nursing management to identify clinical activities which facilitate professional growth of surgical technology caregivers and scrub nurses.

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:  

Bachelor's degree in business administration, Finance, Communications, Healthcare Administration, or related field

OR Associate’s degree and four years of related experience

Basic Life Support (BLS) through American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (Health Care Provider)

Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) through the Associate of Surgical Technologists

Strong time management and teamwork skills

Computer skills and experience with software applications, I.e., Word, Teams, Excel, PowerPoint

Solid communication and customer service skills

Ability to travel to various Cleveland Clinic locations and flexibility with hours worked

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:  

Two years of relevant experience

Experience scrubbing multiple surgical cases across various units, including OR and GYN

Preceptor (training) or lead technician experience

Strong familiarity across multiple service lines and demonstrated proficiency in more than one specialty area

Experience with Education

Worked as an Instructor from a Surgical tech school

Physical Requirements:

Requires full range of motion; manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination.

Requires standing and walking for extensive periods of time.

Requires corrected hearing and vision to normal range.

Requires some exposure to communicable diseases or bodily fluids.

Light Work - Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly (Constantly: activity or condition exists 2/3 or more of the time) to move objects.

Even though the weight lifted may be only a negligible amount, a job should be rated Light Work: (1) when it requires walking or standing to a significant degree; or (2) when it requires sitting most of the time but entails pushing and/or pulling of arm or leg controls; and/or (3) when the job requires working at a production rate pace entailing the constant pushing and/or pulling of materials even though the weight of those materials is negligible.

Personal Protective Equipment:

Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
