Summary The Smithsonian Institution is the world’s largest museum, education, and research complex, with 21 museums and the National Zoo. This position is in the National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC). The National Museum of African American History and Culture is a national museum for the study and exhibition of African American history and culture. Responsibilities This position is located in the Office of Collections Management (OCM) and is responsible for directing, coordinating, proposing and initiating agreements for space resolutions and collection movement. The Supervisory Museum Specialist will: Perform management and supervisory functions to develop performance plans, identify areas of growth and improvement, and foster skills that complement the needs of collections management projects. Ensure safe and proper storage, housing, handling, moving, packing and shipping of collections at collection storage facilities as well as coordinate OCM’s participation in the installation and deinstallation of collections from museum exhibits in galleries. Develop, oversee and perform collections management functions that include preparing items for short and long-term storage, transportation among the museum’s various facilities (collections storage, conservation lab, photo studio, preparation room, museum building, and offsite storage), facilitate incoming and outgoing collection items and the presentative and exhibition of the national collection. Plan, request, and manage budget for OCM activities and report on budget and collections work metrics on a quarterly and annual basis. Qualifications Basic Qualifications: Experience related to the operation or management of a museum or similar collection of valuable objects. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include collections management, registration, cataloging, research, preservation, restoration, or conservation of collections of museum material, or other experience related to the position to be filled. Most positions require a particular subject-matter specialization, e.g., aeronautics, anthropology, art, geology, history, natural science, technology, biology, or zoology. In addition to the basic qualification requirement above: Experience: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal Service. For this position, specialized experience is defined as demonstrated experience assisting in the management of a museum’s collection management department and programs related to collections-based functions such as collections management, reporting, exhibition logistics, shipping, and management of off-site collections storage; and overseeing the planning, establishment, and coordination of work schedules, deadlines, and standards for acceptable work.
