Summary

The incumbent leads a team and functions as the key point of contact within Research and Development (R&D) for management and processing of human biospecimens in Roche Diagnostics Germany. This position has oversight for a high volume centralized storage solution and delivers on network/ customer area needs across a diverse portfolio of individual projects and disease states.  Biospecimens are among Roche’s most valuable physical assets and high fidelity data as well as physical samples are critical to all phases of R&D projects.  This leader ensures sample intended uses are compatible with ethics, patient consent, and data privacy regulations.

You develop capabilities of specialized Biospecimen Acquisition and Management (BAM) team members, including their skills in process workflows, validated LIMS database management, and various sample processing techniques. As a line manager, you design and optimize team members’ personal professional journeys, coach direct reports, and collaborate with Sub-Chapter leads in Penzberg and other global sites.

As a BAM Sub-Chapter Lead, you will be a member of the Diagnostics Solutions BAM Leadership Team (BAM LT). You partner with technical leaders from the Core Lab Network as well as local and global functions including R&D Services, Site Logistics, and Quality. These interactions bring the right

capabilities and expertise to deliver across Networks’ priorities who organize around business value. You play a key role in crafting and implementing key aspects of BAM’s mid- to long-term strategy and

ultimately contribute to the overall Roche Diagnostics Vision.

Responsibilities

● Key point of contact for disposition of project owned inventory stored in the biorepository

● Define the short and long term capability needs for the Sub-Chapter to deliver on network and

business strategies

● Evaluate quality of physical biospecimens and associated metadata as part of the sample

accessioning process

● Communicate with the acquisition team to coordinate receipt/ return of incoming specimen

shipments from various sources

● Oversight for day to day operation of the biorepository and meeting objectives of research and

development sample needs

● Ensure consumption and storage of human biospecimens are focused on sustainability

● Manage biological material transactions; registration, shipment, returns and retrievals, inventory

searches, and identify and resolve discrepancies

● Partner with research and development technical leads to prioritize sample transactions within

the centralized storage solution

● Manage centralized sample processing services (eg. aliquotting, pooling, spiking)

● Work with network leads to ensure BAM functional resource allocation matches strategic business

directives

● Employ six sigma principles and tools to develop and maintain a lean organization/ service

efficiency (eg. capability analysis, 5S, process mapping, fault tree analysis)

Knowledge, Skills, and Ability

● Advanced degree in scientific discipline with broad knowledge in molecular biology, serum work

area, protein chemistry and understanding of medical device development (especially assays)

● Experience or background in technical and ethical aspects of biospecimen utilization is a plus

● Experience in the diagnostics industry or clinical practice

● Courage, vision and drive to be at the forefront of innovative change

● Advanced knowledge of a limited variety of specialized laboratory and automation equipment

Qualifications

● Schulbildung (Second-level education): A-levels or equivalent

● Berufsausbildung: (Professional education): Bachelor with 6-8 years experience or Master with 5-7

years experience

● Berufserfahrung/Dauer: (Professional experience/duration): Relevant experience in the field of

biology, immunology, clinical diagnostics or other related scientific disciplines. Management

experience highly desirable

● Spezialkenntnisse: (Specialist knowledge): Experience or background in technical and ethical

aspects of biospecimen utilization is a plus

Location

Penzberg (Germany)

As this position is a global role, domestic and international business travel (approx. 10%) will be required depending on ongoing team and business project activities.
