About the Role:

The University of Michigan?s Michigan Engineering Zone (MEZ) is seeking a passionate, equity-driven person to serve as a Student Success Advisor. This role supports students across UMCI programs?including precollege, workforce development, graduate, and certificate programs?by providing college and career advising, resource navigation, and barrier removal that help learners access opportunities and persist through transitions in education and career.

Located in the heart of Midtown Detroit, the Michigan Engineering Zone (MEZ) is a place for middle and high school students in Southeast Michigan to learn, grow, and lead. As part of the University of Michigan Center for Innovation (UMCI), the MEZ provides world-class STEM resources, instruction, and counseling to students who may become the next generation of Victors.

This role is dedicated to resource navigation and barrier removal, ensuring that learners can successfully access and leverage opportunities while overcoming obstacles that may hinder their academic, personal, or professional success.

 

Key Responsibilities:Meet with precollege students to assist with initial intake of student information and evaluation of student?s support needs.Support students with college, workforce, and scholarship applications.Help students develop and improve essays and personal statements.Assist with FAFSA, financial aid, and scholarship processes.Provide individual and group advising for high school juniors and seniors.Work with students and partners to address barriers and find solutions.Help facilitate workshops and presentations on college readiness, career pathways, and skill development.Collaborate with UMCI staff to build initiatives that promote persistence and success across the educational continuum.Maintain detailed and accurate records of student interactions, progress, and outcomes.Other responsibilities, as needed or based on candidate's current educational goals and skill set, such as supporting outreach programming, curriculum development, event planning, participant recruitment, and/or program evaluation.Work Expectations:Build meaningful relationships with MEZ high school students?and participants across UMCI programs?to understand their goals, needs, and challenges.Proactively serve as a resource navigator, connecting students with academic, financial, career, and wellness supports both within UMCI and through external partners.Discuss college, career, and workforce pathways with students at different stages of their educational journeys.Help maintain accurate participant records, including documenting barriers, referrals, and outcomes of resource connections.Be flexible and willing to assist with diverse projects and needs across UMCI programs.Manage an independent project of the person own interest, if applicable, especially one tied to improving student access to resources.Be open-minded and willing to share their own educational journey to model authentic navigation of barriers and use of resources.

 Additional Notes:

The MEZ is located in Midtown Detroit. This role is hybrid with some hours working remotely and at least one day in person during program hours. The person in this role should also be comfortable working with secondary students and families who may not yet understand the importance of college and career readiness.
