The Perioperative RN is responsible for providing high-quality, patient-centered nursing care in a fast-paced ambulatory surgery center. This role involves preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative nursing care to ensure patient safety and positive surgical outcomes. The RN collaborates with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and the surgical team while maintaining compliance with regulatory standards and best practices.

Responsibilities

1. Preoperative Care:

• Conducts preoperative assessments, including health history, allergies, and medication reconciliation.

• Provides patient education on surgical procedures, anesthesia, and postoperative care.

• Ensures proper patient identification, site marking verification, and completion of informed consent.

• Initiates IV therapy, administers preoperative medications, and monitors vital signs.

 

2. Intraoperative Care:

• Functions as a circulating nurse, ensuring sterile technique and maintaining a safe surgical environment.

• Assists the surgical team by providing necessary instruments, supplies, and medications.

• Monitors patient hemodynamics and responds to any changes in condition.

• Documents intraoperative care, including sponge, instrument, and sharps counts.

 

3. Post-Anesthesia Care (PACU):

• Monitors patients in the immediate postoperative period, ensuring safe emergence from anesthesia.

• Manages pain, nausea, and hemodynamic stability while providing emotional support.

• Provides discharge education to patients and caregivers, ensuring understanding of postoperative instructions.

 

4. Compliance & Quality Assurance:

• Adheres to infection prevention protocols and surgical safety checklists.

• Ensures accurate and timely documentation in the electronic health record (EHR).

• Participates in quality improvement initiatives and regulatory compliance efforts.

• Maintains current certifications and continuing education in perioperative nursing.

Qualifications Active California RN licenseCNOR or CPAN certification (preferred but not required)BLS, ACLSStrong critical thinking, communication, and teamwork skillsMust have skill set for Pre-Admission Testing (PAT), Pre-op, Intra-op, PACUCirculate (scrub is a plus)Knowledge of ASC procedures: Plastics, General, Ophthalmology, etc.This position requires flexibility, attention to detail, and a commitment to delivering exceptional patient care in a surgical setting.
