The Opportunity

Our location in Irving, TX currently has an opportunity for a Staff Mechanical Engineer. In this exciting role you will be supporting the Abbott Hematology organization by being a Subject Matter Expert in technical aspects of the organization's instrumentation platforms.

The position comprises Service and System Integration responsibilities within an R&D team by supporting and developing Hematology testing platforms.

What You’ll Work On  

We are seeking a highly experienced and technically proficient Staff Mechanical Engineer to lead the design, development, and support of innovative medical devices and instrumentation platforms. This role involves cross-functional collaboration, advanced engineering analysis, and hands-on service support to ensure product excellence and regulatory compliance.

Product & Process Development

Independently lead and oversee tasks related to new and existing products, processes, prototypes, fixtures, and tools

Apply advanced multidisciplinary engineering knowledge to design and develop medical devices and complex subsystems

Establish and validate requirements and specifications, including justifications and supportive testing

Lead the development of product specifications, FMEAs, DOEs, and verification/validation protocols

Recommend and implement Design Control procedures in accordance with FDA guidelines

Engineering Analysis & Risk Mitigation

Perform experimental, empirical, and numerical analyses to evaluate and improve designs

Use simulation tools to mitigate design risks and ensure reliability

Lead development of test methods and simulation models

Manage risk documentation including dFMEA, pFMEA, and risk analyses

Leadership & Collaboration

Serve as technical lead for subsystem and instrument projects

Provide mentorship and training to other engineers

Assist in developing site engineering standards and technical guidance

Maintain effective communication across teams and leadership

Service & Support

Act as Subject Matter Expert for instrumentation platforms

Lead service escalations and provide onsite technical support

Perform installation, integration, and performance monitoring at clinical sites

Respond to service tickets for break/fix, upgrades, and preventative maintenance

Lead investigations into technical complaints and lab instrument issues

Quality & Compliance

Execute study protocols aligned with Abbott Quality procedures and good lab practices

Apply quantitative methods to analyze data and implement improvements

Ensure compliance with regulatory standards and maintain the effectiveness of the quality system

Additional Details

Travel: Approximately 10%, with potential increases during peak activity

Service responsibilities include maintaining internal instrument base and supporting external clinical systems

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering.

Hands on experience with medical devices with focus on troubleshooting and maintenance.

Up to 10% Travel in the US.

Minimum 6 years of experience in an Engineering capacity 

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in a clinical laboratory servicing diagnostic medical equipment 

Knowledge of electro-mechanical, optical and fluidic systems

Experience planning and executing hardware / software integration activities

The base pay for this position is $85,300.00 – $170,700.00. In specific locations, the pay range may vary from the range posted.
