Staff Mechanical Design Engineer - Smart Neurosurgical Instruments

As a Staff Mechanical Engineer on Stryker’s Neurosurgical New Product Development team, you will play a key role in designing and developing innovative medical devices that enhance patient care globally. This position supports the Integrated Systems & Smart Accessories team within the Neurosurgical business unit, focusing on the development of Stryker’s next-generation Highspeed Drill Platform. You’ll be involved throughout the entire product development cycle—from concept through launch—collaborating with cross-functional R&D teams to deliver high-quality, impactful solutions using sound engineering practices.

You will need to live within commuting distance to our Portage, Michigan office for this hybrid position. You will need to be onsite a minimum of three days a week, with flexibility to work from home on other days.

What you will do

Design, develop, and verify components and subsystems for medical devices with minimal supervision

Translate user needs into design specifications and deliver system-level solutions  

Lead prototyping and testing efforts to validate design performance  

Identify and resolve complex design issues using sound engineering judgment 

Apply clinical knowledge to author design inputs and support Voice of Customer sessions  

Ensure compliance with industry standards and mentor others in design control practices  

Create and maintain engineering documentation, including Design History Files  

Collaborate cross-functionally to drive projects from concept through launch  

What You Will Need 

Required Qualifications 

Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Biomedical, or related field)  

Minimum 4 years of relevant engineering experience  

Experience designing mechanical or electro-mechanical assemblies 

Proficiency in engineering drawing creation and application of GD&T  

Preferred Qualifications 

Experience with CAE tools and design for manufacturability (DFM) principles  

Knowledge of materials and manufacturing processes  

Ability to communicate technical plans to cross-functional teams  

Familiarity with risk management and quality systems in a regulated environment  

Travel Percentage: 10%
