Staff Accountant

A large company in the Kansas City area is seeking a Staff Accountant for a 3–4 month contract to provide coverage for an employee on leave. The team is targeting someone who can start within the next few weeks and quickly step into the role. This opportunity could serve as a foot in the door with a well-known organization.

The Staff Accountant will handle general ledger accounting responsibilities including journal entries, month-end close, commission accruals, balance sheet reconciliations, and other accounting tasks as needed. The ideal candidate has 3+ years of G/L accounting experience, a Bachelor’s degree, and intermediate Excel skills, with the ability to jump right in with minimal ramp-up time.

This position will be mostly onsite, though the manager may be open to a hybrid schedule once things are progressing well. The pay range is $30–35 per hour, depending on experience.

Job Description

This Staff Accountant role supports a business unit by finalizing sales activity, ensuring accurate revenue recognition, and maintaining compliance with internal control requirements. The position partners closely with sales teams and administrative staff to gather documentation, process commissions, and complete month-end accounting activities. The role is primarily focused on transactional accounting, data accuracy, and reconciliation.

ResponsibilitiesPartner with sales representatives and administrative staff to finalize sales transactions for an assigned business unitGather and review required documentation to ensure compliance with internal controls and revenue recognition policiesPerform transactional accounting duties, including data entry, sales processing, and transaction finalizationPrepare and post journal entries related to sales and commissions as part of the month-end closePrepare and record month-end accruals for sales and commissions not yet recognizedPerform balance sheet reconciliations for sales, commissions, and other assigned accountsReview transactions prior to close to ensure accuracy, completeness, and complianceSupport commission calculations, validation, and related accounting activitiesEnter, track, and reconcile sales data within an ERP systemUse Excel to analyze data, prepare reports, and support general ledger and reconciliation workCommunicate with cross-functional teams to resolve discrepancies and obtain necessary informationEssential SkillsExperience with general ledger and transactional accountingStrong month-end close experience, including journal entries and accrualsHands-on experience with balance sheet reconciliationsWorking knowledge of revenue recognition principles and internal controlsExperience supporting commission-related accountingStrong Excel skills for analysis, reporting, and reconciliationHigh attention to detail and accuracy in reviewing documentation and processing dataStrong organizational and communication skillsAdditional Skills & QualificationsExperience working in an ERP systemExposure to CRM systems used for sales tracking and coordinationFamiliarity with SOX-related processes and compliance conceptsAbility to collaborate effectively in a fast-paced, cross-functional environmentComfort working in a predominantly transactional accounting role

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract position based out of Kansas City, MO.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $35.00 - $35.00/hr.
