Staff Accountant

Description We are looking for an experienced Staff Accountant to join a growing commercial landscaping and snow removal company based in Maplewood, Minnesota. This role offers an opportunity to manage daily accounting operations while partnering with leadership on financial reporting and analysis. Ideal candidates will thrive in a dynamic, small-business environment and bring expertise in areas such as payroll, job costing, and compliance with union and prevailing wage requirements.
Responsibilities:
• Prepare and record journal entries while maintaining the accuracy of the general ledger.
• Oversee month-end closing activities and assist in the preparation of monthly financial statements.
• Conduct job costing analysis and track project profitability across seasonal operations.
• Reconcile bank accounts, credit cards, and balance sheet accounts on a monthly basis.
• Manage vendor records, including W-9 forms, and support year-end tax filings.
• Assist in payroll processing, ensuring proper allocation of labor costs for both union and non-union employees.
• Maintain compliance with prevailing wage regulations, union contracts, and commercial agreements.
• Collaborate with external accounting firms during annual reviews or tax filings.
• Identify opportunities to streamline accounting processes and implement modern workflows. Requirements • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field, or equivalent work experience.
• Minimum of 2–5 years of hands-on accounting experience, preferably in a small-business or construction-related environment.
• Strong knowledge of general accounting principles and month-end closing procedures.
• Demonstrated experience in job costing, service-based billing, or project accounting.
• Familiarity with union payroll, prevailing wage rules, or multi-state payroll processes is highly desirable.
• Proficiency in accounting software such as QuickBooks, Sage, or similar platforms.
• Advanced Excel skills with strong attention to detail and accuracy.
• Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with operations and leadership teams.
