Description
We are looking for a dedicated Staff Accountant to oversee accounts payable and payroll operations within a nonprofit higher education setting. This role requires a strong understanding of financial systems, attention to detail, and the ability to ensure compliance with institutional and regulatory standards. The ideal candidate will bring expertise in managing vendor payments, payroll processing, and financial reporting while contributing to process improvements.
Responsibilities:
• Manage the full cycle of accounts payable processes, including invoice entry, purchase order matching, approval workflows, and payment execution.
• Reconcile vendor statements, maintain accurate vendor records, and ensure compliance with documentation requirements such as W-9s and 1099s.
• Process biweekly payroll accurately and on time, addressing employee inquiries and resolving payroll issues with professionalism.
• Coordinate with HR to manage employee changes, benefit deductions, and other payroll-related updates.
• Prepare and reconcile payroll-related general ledger accounts, creating journal entries and ensuring accuracy.
• Support month-end and year-end close activities, including accounts payable accruals and financial reporting.
• Assist with tax reporting, including quarterly filings and the preparation of W-2 forms, ensuring adherence to all regulations.
• Contribute to internal audits by providing requested documentation and supporting internal control assessments.
• Identify and implement improvements to streamline processes in accounts payable, payroll, and accounting workflows.
• Serve as a subject matter expert for staff and departments on policies and best practices related to accounts payable and payroll.
Requirements
• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
• experience in accounts payable and payroll processing, preferably within a nonprofit not required
• Strong knowledge of accounting principles and payroll regulations.
• Proficiency in financial and payroll systems, with experience in platforms like Sage, Banner, or Paychex.
• Advanced skills in Excel, including the ability to create reports and perform reconciliations.
• Excellent organizational and analytical abilities with a keen attention to detail.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with a focus on providing exceptional customer service.
• Ability to handle sensitive information with confidentiality and maintain data accuracy
