Sr. Structural Design Engineer

Virgin Galactic is seeking an experienced Senior Structural Design Engineer to join our Operations team.  This engineering position will use 3Dx, CATIA, Excel, Matlab, and possibly other tools to determine modifications, repairs, Material Review Board, and other structural design issues resulting from the flight test and commercial operation of our flight vehicles.  This position requires intimate knowledge of aircraft/spacecraft manufacturing techniques as well as the types of materials used and the properties of each material.  Provide cross-functional support to other members of the engineering organization as necessary to ensure safe and efficient product delivery. 

 

Responsabilities

Selects appropriate methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria to resolve complex engineering issues.Anticipates and resolves issues by developing standards and guidelines for diverse engineering activities.Ability to solve problems with a balance of technical product, cost, and schedule.Determines technical objectives of assignments and makes decisions and recommendations that are recognized as authoritative.Maintains current knowledge of developments in the field of specialty and/or other related spacecraft innovations to improve quality and effectiveness of product.   Be the in-house operational expert on Structural changes to the aircraft due to repairs/modifications and damage that may occur in commercial operations.Lead teams to accomplish the above goals as needed.Ability to work in a collaborative environment interfacing with Engineers, Mechanics and management in real-time to resolve problems.

 

Required Skills and Experience

Bachelor’s degree or higher in Mechanical, Aeronautical or related Engineering discipline.8 years or more experience design engineering for aerospace composite fabrication and assembly processesStrong technology skills, including Excel, Catia V5, 3Dx, Matlab and related engineering design and analysis toolsRequired Workbenches: Part Design, Assembly Design, Sketcher, Drafting, Wireframe and Surface DesignDesired Workbenches: Generative Shape Design (GSD), Composites (CPD) Experience using GD&T and ASME Y14.5M-1994 drafting standardsKnowledge of manufacturing methods for various materials (composite layup, metal machining, 3D printing, bonded assembly, mechanical assembly)Experience designing aerospace environments desiredExperience in the development of human spaceflight hardware desiredExperience with Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) software and configuration management processesWorking knowledge of aircraft and space systems and familiarity with relevant aerospace standards (FAA, FAA‐AST etc).Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with high attention to detailExcellent organizational and time-management skills Strong team playerProficiency in Microsoft Office: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook

The annual U.S. base salary range for this full-time position is $108,871.00–$166,036.00. The base pay actually offered will vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, location, and experience and take into account internal equity. Other forms of pay (e.g., bonus or long term incentive) may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and other benefits, dependent on the position offered.
