Sr. Process Safety Engineer, Process Safety Engineering
Description The Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) Facilities, Engineering, and Construction (FEC) organization is looking for a Electrical Safety Engineer to lead the safe design and operation of systems involving Highly Hazardous Chemicals (HHCs)—including hydrogen, lithium-ion, ammonia, and compressed natural gas—across our global operations. This role directly supports Amazon’s 2040 Climate Pledge by enabling the responsible deployment of alternative energy technologies. You’ll work across engineering, operations, and construction teams to integrate Process Safety Management (PSM) requirements from design through execution. Your work will shape safety outcomes at a global scale and ensure that new technologies meet strict internal and external standards. You’ll be responsible for aligning risk controls with best practices and regulatory frameworks, including the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Risk Management Plan (RMP), NFPA 70E, IEC 61511, IEC 61010. Key job responsibilities 1. Participate in risk evaluations in accordance with OSHA 1910.119, IEC 61511, ISO12100 and ANSI B11 practices 2. Support the development of PSM policies, standards, training, and safe operating procedures 3. Interpret and apply regulations, codes, and relevant standards 4. Advise partner engineering organizations and operations teams on regulations, regulatory compliance concerns, and good engineering practices in relation to equipment design, process control, electrical safety system operation. 5. Participate in new standard developments with Engineering, Injury Prevention Specialists, Reliability and Maintenance Engineering (RME), Operations, and other key stakeholders 6. Work with various teams to review and approve designs of new equipment and modifications to existing equipment 7. Maintain all regulatory compliance documentation to ensure accurate and up to date adherence to standards 8. Manage projects that require certifications that comply with local, national and international regulations 9. Knowledge and understanding of equipment certification requirements (CE, UL, etc.) and experience working with NRTLs 10. Integration of control and safety systems into the design of new and existing equipment 11. Work with WHS safety teams, technical engineering teams and suppliers to specify safety or other risk-related requirements for projects across multiple regions 12. Contribute to building a safety culture that enables our technical engineering teams to develop safe and compliant products, systems and solutions. About the team Our Mission: The Global PSE team’s mission is to ensure the safe design and reliable operation of facilities that contain or use Highly Hazardous Chemicals (HHCs). Our mission is to provide the necessary support so Amazon can achieve the 2040 Climate Pledge responsibly and in a manner that safeguards the safety of our associates and the community at large. Program Strategy: The team’s focus is on building a safety program that reduces the HHC risks at Amazon to as low as reasonably possible. To do so, we are working to establish process safety frameworks for our HHC processes: (1)Technology – Process Safety Information, Process Hazard Analysis (PHA), Safe work practices (2) Facilities – Mechanical Integrity, Pre-Start-up Safety Reviews, Management of Change (MOC) (3) Personnel – Process Safety Training, Process Safety Incident Investigations (4) Audit and Assurance – Monitor program performance and maturation Basic Qualifications - Bachelor's degree in electrical or mechanical engineering, engineering technology or equivalent - 6+ years of industrial engineer, operations engineer, manufacturing engineer, or project engineer in a manufacturing environment experience - Experience communicating complex business concepts in verbal and written form - Knowledge of building codes and regulations including Life Safety, BOCA, NFPA, NEC, and OSHA - Experience with preventive maintenance procedures, industrial electrical, industrial controls, and industrial electronics & robotics - 6. Working knowledge and experience with National Recognized Test Laboratory (NRTL) and Notified Bodies. - 7. Knowledge of international and EU/NA Standards such as EU Machinery Directive, ISO, ANSI, OSHA, NFPA, IEC standards Preferred Qualifications - 1. Master’s degree with 10+ years of experience in Electrical or Instrumentation Engineering in Manufacturing sector. CSME or other functional safety certification preferred - 2. Experience with design and risk assessment methodology of safety instrumentation system in manufacturing environment. Experience working of low voltage systems such a transmitters and data collection methods similar to SCADA/ PLC or DCS systems. - 3. Familiarity with medium voltage distribution systems design. Detailed understanding of uninterruptable power sources, diesel generators, inverters, electrical switchgear, power distribution units, Battery energy storage systems (BESS) variable frequency drives, and automatic/static transfer switches. - 4. Excellent understanding of applicable regional electrical code (NEC, CEC, ETCI, NFC, etc.). - 5. The base pay for this position ranges from $128,600/year in our lowest geographic market up to $213,600/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
